The good news is that on May 1, Outlaw Records launched their online store to greatly extend this excellent and economical service. You can now visit http://www.outlawrecords.co.za and buy good quality second hand CDs, no matter where you live. With the site’s emphasis on speed, one can search for albums by genre, artist or title and order with online forms, email, fax or telephone. Payment will be equally straightforward and credit cards, cheques, postal orders as well as bank transfers are to be accepted by the totally secure site. Fast delivery and free postage for all purchases over R200 will also be thrown into the bargain. But Outlaw’s new online resource is not just for bargain hunters as, like the previous Outlaw site, users are offered the opportunity to sell their unwanted, good condition CDs online. To do that, one simply sends a list of albums for offloading and Outlaw will respond with a competitive quote. The entire trouble-free procedure, including hints on packaging the items, is described on the website, which also gives music fans the chance to subscribe to two upcoming newsletters. These newsletters were also launched on May 1 - one features Outlaw news as well as details of special offers and competitions. The other is a new arrivals list that will be sent to subscribers once a week to keep them updated on all the CDs that have come into the shop, and give them the first chance to grab the latest arrivals. That is a useful service, as Outlaw’s diverse stock of some 3 000 to 4 000 CDs changes continually. Titles are drawn from Classical, Jazz, Dance, Hip Hop, Rap, Kwaito, Rock and Pop genres, both South African and international. Customers in the Western Cape can find and order their CDs online at Outlaw and then go to a physical Outlaw retail branch at either Castle Street in Cape Town or Main Road, Claremont where they’ll be able to pick up their orders and pay. This simplicity, combined with a diversity of options and low prices, will make Outlawrecords.co.za a popular and convenient destination for all music fans. ---------------- BREYTEN BREYTENBACH RELEASES ‘LADY ONE’ Breyten Bretenbach has released ‘Lady One’, his second collection of song-poems produced with a posse of the finest SA musicians and voices fleshing out his recitations. This legendary South African poet, who spent many years in exile in France during the apartheid era, first appeared on the SA music scene as the focus of a tribute album called ‘Om Te Breyten’. That album from June 2000 had an assortment of contemporary SA musicians composing music to fit Breytenbach’s poems, but the poet did not appear on it. Then in March 2001, Rhythm Records released ‘Mondmusiek', a beautifully packaged and equally well produced collection of Breytenbach poems, delivered in his own inimitable laconic drawl, surrounded by musical arrangements composed and produced by various SA artists at their own creative discretion. It was a critical success, prompting this second chapter. ‘Lady One’ again features a broad range of SA musical talent including Ernestine Deane, Ben Amato, Paul Riekert, Jean Marais, Laurinda Hofmeyr, Arno Carstens, Tim Parr, the Benguela boys and Barry van Zyl. It is once again released by Albert du Plessis on the supremely worthy Rhythm Records label. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- WILDE ALS - SAMSARA JIVA (Afrimusik) Tertius van der Merwe persuaded Sunset Recording Studio master producer Jürgen von Wechmar to pick up his guitar, gathered some friends (Pedro von Willig and Peter Heyns), named their band after the Afrikaans name for the herb known as Wormwood and together they have produced a hard rocking debut CD. Think Valiant Swart joining Bad Company. Great lyrics and searing guitars. The new wave of Afrikaans Rock rolls on... http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/wildeals.html ------------------ KELVIN DECLINED (RHYTHM RECORDS) This debut 10-track offering from the new gang in (Cape) town, which was launched to a packed River Club two weeks ago, has now been officially released. The four band members - Mark McCree (v.g), Neil Payten (b.k), Guido Helm (g) and Justin Tee (d) - co-wrote all the music with manic lead vocalist McCree contributing all the zany lyrics. The album was produced by the band and Jürgen von Wechmar at Sunset Studios earlier this year. Potential singles, apart from ‘42’, which has already received healthy radio play, are ‘Stan 229’ and the crowd-favourite ‘Standing In A Bottle’. The album’s full tracklisting is: ‘42’, ‘Blinded’, ‘Stan 229’, ‘Guntalk’, ‘Funky Chicken’, ‘Yellow’, ‘Girls In Black’, ‘Drugs Me’, ‘Standing In A Bottle’, ‘Greenhouse Effect’. http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/kelvindeclined.html --------------- KOBUS! - KOBUS! (ENT) The seismic effects following the disbanding of the Springbok Nude Girls in 2001 have mostly dissipated, except for all those SA music websites still boosting their stats with hits from the many "netters" really looking for "nude girls". But the band’s presence has been sorely missed, and many fans watch and wait for the individual members’ "solo years" careers to begin. There were a few, brief Crous and Carstens acoustic sets, and some Sex Tips For Boys material featuring ex-Nudies trumpeter Adriaan Brand is promised, but nothing more than that until now. Kobus! is the duo formed initially in November 2000 by Theo Crous (Nudies guitarist) and Francois Blom (ex-Voice of Destruction vocalist). Their debut album, ‘Kobus!’ arrives in a SA rock scene where we find some new rock bands working hard to perfect their images to hopefully catch Seether’s slipstream into the US nu-rock heartland, while others like Starskii, LILO, and Dolly Rockers are exploring the broader and quieter rock borders with folk and alt-country. On the Afrikaans rock front, names like Beeskraal, Brixton Moord En Roof Orkes, and Karen Zoid meld classic rock sounds to intelligent lyrics written to reflect and interpret life in SA today. Kobus!, however, head straight for the head, evoking the softer, trippy sounds and vocals of early Pink Floyd with this huge comfy couch of an album, all gorgeous two chord Afrikaans folk symphonies with blurry distant vocals, and a psychedelic sheen that seeps into every (digital) groove of this hour-long musical pleasure cruise. Songs like ‘Sondagmiddag’, the hauntingly-gorgeous ‘Jou Oë’ or the reflective ‘Dink Jy Nou’, flow over and through you, a perfect new soundtrack for those living in the land of the Lotus Eaters and elsewhere. But it’s not all smooth sailing and there are some harder moments dotted through the album. To pay respectful tribute, and to place this new act in a historical musical context, the album begins with a punchy ‘sakkie-sakkie’ ramble through a recitation of all the big names in Afrikaans pop-rock over the years. It ends with the repeated phrase "Wie is Kobus?" that gradually shakes off its old tune and merges with a contemporary slice of dance electronica. Then, in the middle of the album, we meet die ‘Hoenderman’, a terminally strange headbanging song which features a very funny chickens clucking chorus and which is probably going to get the most radio play, creating an inaccurate perception of the whole album. ‘Nege’ is a happy little song that explores the mystical multiplication powers of the number nine and the closing track, ‘Gee Raat!’, gallops off into the sunset with the duo sounding like they recorded these squeaky vocals after ingesting some helium. All in all, ‘Kobus!’ is the sound of SA music rulebooks being torn up and used as Rizlas. It’s an extraordinary album and a signpost for the burgeoning Afrikaans rock scene and their emerging rock poets. A new path appears and Theo Crous is back (in front). (SS) http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/kobus.html ----- DEMOS ----- TUESDAY'S CHILD - FOLLOWING LIGHT (Independent) 'Following Light' is a 5 track demo from Cape Town band Tuesday's Child. Vocalist Lois has a wonderfully clear voice and these catchy, acoustic songs are the perfect vehicle for it. This CD, recorded at M.A.R.S. studios in Cape Town, is very professionally done and includes all the lyrics in the booklet. Like Karma, The Corrs and The Cranberries? Then you'll love this. http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/tuesdayschild.html ------------ COMPILATIONS ------------ VARIOUS ARTISTS - SELECTION #1 Free CD with the May issue of SL magazine The May issue of SL (Student Life) magazine comes with a free cover disc. 16 recent dance, rock, kwaito and trip hop tracks of which 11 are South African. Artists featured include Roger Goode, Louise Carver, Springbok Nude Girls (with the SA Rock Digest chart-topper 'Dimmer'), Tweak, Felix Laband, Moodphase 5ive, Perez and Redd Angel (with the Gabby LeRoux Kwaito remix of their Digest #3 hit 'Fabulous Day'). Recommended. --------- RE-ISSUES --------- FREEDOMS CHILDREN - GALACTIC VIBES (RetroFresh) http://rock.co.za/legends/freedomschildren The most influential South African rock band of the psychedelic era and perhaps of all time - renowned for their live extended aural exploration of rock, early electronica and tribal rhythms. Long sought after by collectors worldwide and finally officially released "Galactic Vibes" includes the jaw dropping live 16 minute version of "The Homecoming" plus "1999", "Seahorse", "That did it" and more... some great rare pics and liner notes included. --------------- PEACH - ON LOAN FOR EVOLUTION (RetroFresh) http://rock.co.za/legends/peach Cheeky, trashy, sleazy, fired up post punk from four teenage girls and a guy who defined the "new wave" explosion of the mid 80's.... best remembered for their live shows and a handful of classic pop hits like "Its so luvverly", "A lot of things", "Nightmare" and their wickedly edgy version of XTC's "Complicated Game". All the hits are included plus an unreleased gem in "Out of tune", the proverbial ton of rare photos and liner notes by the band's then manager Graham Boynton. ------------- INTERNATIONAL ------------- ROGER WATERS - FLICKERING FLAME - THE SOLO YEARS VOLUME 1 http://www.rock.co.za/files/roger_waters_best_of.html When Roger Waters started his "In The Flesh 2002" world tour in Cape Town on the 27th February, the encore song was the new and previously unheard 'Flickering Flame'. Now as the tour continues (currently in Portugal and Spain), SonyMusic have released a Roger Waters retrospective titled 'Flickering Flame - The Solo Years Volume 1'. This CD contains a demo version of 'Flickering Flame' (different to the MP3 which is floating around the Net) and the original demo of 'Lost Boys Calling' (from the 'Legend of 1900' film, recently seen on MNET). I would have preferred the official version with the Eddie Van Halen guitar solo... well, maybe it'll be on Volume 2 which the CD title hints at. There is also a version of Bob Dylan's 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' from the 1998 film 'The Dybbuk from the Holy Apple Field'. An interesting and obscure South African connection on this CD is the woman with the strong SA accent speaking at the beginning of 'Three Wishes' (from 'Amused To Death'). This CD includes tracks from all of Roger's post-Floyd solo albums, including the brilliant 'Towers Of Faith' from the very-heard-to-find 'When The Wind Blows' soundtrack (released in 1987). Also featured is the live 'In The Flesh' version of 'One Small Candle' which was the encore track at the Joburg concert on the 1st March and has never been released as a studio track. The message on the CD cover says: "a collectors limited edition...", and as with most compilations you can't please all the people all the time, but this CD should please most people from the casual fan to the real hardcore fanatics (c'mon you know you are). CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR (Gothic Deliverance) Part 2 Ellis joined the exodus and entered the blues rock of Juicy Lucy, while a further inclusion of Nick Potter on bass solidified new recruitment, saxophonist Dave Jackson. During the 1970 period, Robert Fripp of King Crimson would feature on their next two albums, "The least we can do is wave to each other" and "H to he who am the only one". The happenings of Van Der Graaf were diverse with Hammill leaving and returning at least five times. Once you've opened the door to Hammill's bleak visions you will slowly be scathed and molested by a philosophical entourage of truth. The driving "Killer" off the album "H to he" literally executes the selfishness of man in all manner of speaking. By the time you've absorbed the entrails of this warning which has left you physically drained, turn to the second track "House with no door". A rare melodic motif hovers with this cleansing yet haunting ballad. The influence of Hammill was enough to stimulate theatrical Peter Gabriel and the sum of all his influence could be clearly defined on the Genesis (aka Gabriel) "The lamb lies down on Broadway". Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music JENNIFER FERGUSON - UNTIMELY The word "Africa" is a magical word -- magical to me because it has always possessed the power to conjure up emotions, visions, and adventurous feelings. For example, when Jennifer Ferguson sings the next to last tune on 'Untimely', her delicate melody creates a spell embodying the power of the word "Africa", and I am powerfully moved. This is an intimate album, a personal communiqué for millions of South African people. While many of the songs Jennifer sings are universal in their applications or interpretations, the overall feel is of an intimate song for South Africa. Most of her songs concern social issues or social relationships, but they are neither obvious nor angry. I bought this CD because I was curious about her work, and because it has a version of 'Master Jack'. But my curiosity, intrigue even, about Ms. Ferguson continues. The re-release of her 1986 'Hand Around the Heart' sounds promising. And her two 'Master Jack' tracks (one's a radio edit) are haunting and masterful in an understated way. The slightly altered lyrics make the classic song her own. Social issues? Take 'Roses' for example, which talks about ending suffering for children, and about freedom. Take 'Eugene Talks In White River'. Though Mr. Terreblanche is mentioned by name, the song appears to be about the poor living conditions black South Africans endure. I don't get all of the South African references, but I'm sure y'all will get many of them. The ones neither of us get must be personal. Jennifer (I think of her by her first name because of the intense personal feel to the album) wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on this work, except for David Marks's 'Master Jack'. To describe her sound... I'd say modern folk -- which if you know folk, you know the term doesn't describe anything. So maybe we can describe 'Untimely' with the convenient handle of: modern artistic folk soft rock with social sensibilities? An intimate album for a nation, a personal album for Jennifer, and an intimate, personal, and insightful album for me. The minimalist arrangements give the album a genuine arty feel and a literary sense of composition. 'Untimely' is a thought-provoking work that rewards one musically and lyrically, emotionally and intellectually. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music RADIO RATS - MUSIC FOR FUNERALS (RADIUM WRECKORDS) A question that has often perplexed me is why does the word "funeral" begin with "fun"? The Radio Rats' 'Music for Funerals' does nothing to answer this question as it is not fun, but neither is it an album of dirges. Chief Rat Jonathan Handley and his pack have crafted 16 tracks that are dedicated to the memory of all who might've died accidentally this last century. Opening with a 'wailing across the prairie' harmonica, the album maintains a wild west feel to it, but it seems that the Rats had spent a fair bit of time listening to Bowie records circa his Ziggy Stardust period as there is more than a hint of that glam rock sound involved. Over and above this, room is made for some blues workouts, especially in 'Don't Shoot the DJ'. All this makes for an intriguing mix of sounds and a highly listenable to album. The Wild West influence is strangely mixed in 'Trouble in Tombstone' which for me is the stand out track. The music is decidedly rock, while the lyrics tell the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and friends who fought in that famous gun battle. The song is dedicated to the dying mining towns of the Wild West of Johannesburg and in particular the Rats' native Klerksdorp. This song should possible have been subtitled 'Gunfight at the OK Bazaars'. Recently the Digest lamented the fact that the English musicians were not singing about local issues, but there are enough references to SA here for this to satisfy those craving for English songs with a domestic flavour. Mention should be made of Paul (Botha), a friend of the band who died in 1997, who is buried in track 2 ('We're here today to bury Paul') and then is exhumed for a reprise of the song at track 7 to be buried again, only faster (according to the sleeve notes). 'Music for Funerals' shows that there is much more to the Rats than 'ZX Dan' (their Radio 5 #2 hit from 1979 which is on their 'Into The Night We Slide' album). Those who enjoy the gem that 'ZX Dan' is, would do well to check out this album, it's a musical journey I recommend you undertake. http://rock.co.za/legends/radiorats John Samson, London, UK mailto:john@sarockdigest.com RADIUM WRECKORDS The home of the Radio Rats, The Glee Club, the Chauffeurs and the Pop Guns Postnet Suite 89 Private Bag X335 Cape Town 8000 Jonathan Handley mailto:radiumwreckage@yahoo.com ------------------- SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS http://rock.co.za/charts This week [Last week] Title - Artist 30 YEARS AGO 1 [1] Beautiful Sunday - Daniel Boone 2 [2] Mother and Child Reunion - Paul Simon 3 [7] Amazing Grace - Military Band of The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards 4 [3] Son of My Father - Chicory Tip 5 [6] Without You - Nilsson 25 YEARS AGO 1 [1] Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Julie Covington 2 [2] Don't Leave Me This Way - Thelma Houston 3 [3] Living Next Door To Alice - Smokie 4 [4] Rock 'n Me - Steve Millar Band 5 [6] When I Need You - Leo Sayer 20 YEARS AGO 1 [1] Get Down On It - Kool & The Gang 2 [3] Happy Birthday - Altered Images 3 [4] Don't You Want Me - Human League 4 [6] Centrefold - J Geils Band 5 [2] Trouble - Lindsey Buckingham 15 YEARS AGO 1 [3] All I Ask - Cliff Richard & Sarah Brightman 2 [1] Sometimes - Erasure 3 [2] Boom Boom - Paul Lekakis 4 [4] The Final Countdown - Europe 5 [6] Everything I Own - Boy George It seems that every 10 years or so, Andrew Lloyd Webber writes a classic as 25 years ago, Julie Covington was at the top of the charts with 'Don't Cry for me Argentina' from his musical 'Evita', and 15 years ago, Cliff & Sarah took his 'Phantom of the Opera' hit 'All I Ask (Of You)' to the top. Unfortunately, that drew no response, which maybe is not that surprising. While waiting for the responses to flood in, I didn't let the grass grow under my feet, however, but went on searching for material. I have now found a nice cache of programs and have satisfied one of my ambitions, namely, to open a download page for others who remember Springbok and miss the mind stimulation that went with listening to a radio program and envisioning the actors and situations. For anyone who would like to listen to these programs, point your browser to http://www.rlsuth.com and go to the download page indicated. Lastly, if anyone has any recordings of anything from Springbok, be it "Forces Favourites", "The Mind of Tracey Dark" or just a cricket commentary, please let me know. Thank you, Richard Sutherland mailto:rlsuth@hotmail.com {What an incredible archive you have created here Richard. I listened to an episode of Jet Jungle (adverts and all) and loved it. A request for working musical instruments from the organisers Venessa Nolan and Smoke Signals, in lieu of the R40 entrance fee, produced a reasonable pile of recorders, flutes and percussion instruments - Gustav Andor, the editor of Stage Magazine generously donated a full drum kit. Not sure what the Homestead will think about that heh heh... Freda, a street child who reached the Pop Idols final 100, opened the concert on the 206 acoustic stage and was followed by strong sets by Two Wise Men, Natalia, Venessa Nolan (showcasing some attractive new songs, including the striking ‘Breathe’ with its unforgettable piano riff), Simon van Gend (with Ben Amato and Eric Michot on bass), and Sons Of Trout. Michael Toye, the initiator of the Word Circus, filled the gaps between the sets with songs and stories. Upstairs on The Jam rock stage, Velve and Flow played assured sets setting up the party atmosphere. Next up were New World Inside with their manic speed-punk anthems, and lead singer Francois Badenhorst flinging himself around the stage during songs like ‘Since I Met You’ and the band’s great version of the Beach Boys’ ‘Barbara Anne’. That musical mayhem continued into the blistering set by the zany-looking ska-punkers Hog Hoggiddy Hog. Fresh from a confident showing at their recent CD launch, Kelvin Declined laid further claim to being Cape Town’s most exciting new band. With a swirling mass at the foot of the stage, front man Mark Mclee led his tight combo (and a sing-along crowd) through power versions of ‘42’, ‘Stan 229’ and other gems off their new album. Kobus! then made their Cape Town debut before a truly stunned audience expecting a Nude Girls offshoot and clearly unfamiliar with the duo’s audacious debut album. Francois Blom, the tall, long-haired ex-Voice Of Destruction vocalist and guitarist Theo Crous looked spiffing in their smart suits and belted out electric versions of ‘Wie Is Kobus!’, ‘Jou Oë’, ‘Hoenderman’ and ‘Gee Raat’, a short but adequate showcase of their new album. Racing in from an earlier gig in Stellenbosch, Karen Zoid and her band arrived at the venue with minutes to spare and still produced a set of sheer rock magic to cap off a fine evening’s entertainment. The band now features Anton Lamour on guitar, and he and the solid rhythm section combine perfectly with all the twists, turns, starts, stops and ad-libs that characterise a Karen Zoid performance. Likened by some to a blonde Janis Joplin, Zoid tore through versions of ‘Set Of Wheels (Karoo Anthem)’, a new song called ‘Big Fish In A Small Town’, ‘Taxi’, ‘Afrikaners Is Pleserig’ (which unleashed the wildest moshing of the night), a gorgeous solo rendering of ‘Engel’, and closing with a faster version of ‘Maak Nie Regtig Saak Nie’ which resulted in a broken guitar string and, consequently, no encore. Thanks and credit to the organisers, The Jam, and all the musicians who gave of their time and best performances to turn this benefit concert into a success for all concerned. More info on most of these artists (including Karen Zoid, New World Inside, Kobus!, Natalia, and Kelvin Declined) at: http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/ ------------------ SOUTH AFRICAN DAY CONCERT Dorp @ The Underworld 27 April 2002 Before expounding on the virtues of the latest Dorp gig, mention must be made of the opening act, Oil and Water. This South African group delivered a short set of acoustic rock played with laid back surfer-like confidence. The music sounded like a medium sized version of the Waterboys so called "Big Music" while the lyrics flowed with an REM intelligence. And on to Dorp. With the addition of a live drummer, the population of Dorp has crept up from 3 to 4, and the decibel level more than doubled. Playing new material (presumably from their soon to be released new CD) as well as old favourites like 'Mad Cow' and 'Abra', Pieter Bezuidenhout and the boys sounded slicker and more confident than ever. Kevin Kieswetter's guitar playing also seems to have matured well. The accomplished musical sounds coupled with the mad stage antics of the band and slightly bemused glint in Pieter's eyes made for a aurally and visually pleasing show. Pieter Bezuidenhout has shown a great deal of perseverance as the group's only original member, but the band have gone from strength to strength and it was good to witness the budding fruits of this persistence. (JS) (Dorp's new CD launch will be on the 25th of May at the Halfmoon in Putney, 93 Lower Richmond Road, Putney SW15 1EU). Join the fun from around 19:00! ------------------- ZEN ARCADE & ROB McLENNAN CROSS THE BASSLINE. On Wednesday 8 May, Zen Arcade will perform an eagerly anticipated "unplugged" set at The Bassline, Melville, supported by Rob Mclennan. Having recently wowed the crowds at the 5fm Easter Rock Festival with their distinctive brand of original rock - a dense, multi-layered slab of sound that still remains melodic and accessible - they are no strangers to The Bassline. The success of their first experimental foray into playing "unplugged" at the predominantly jazz venue last year led to them returning for an equally exciting gig in February this year. Fans can expect to hear some unusual reworkings of favourites as well as a handful of new songs. Supporting Zen Arcade will be Rob McLennan of No Friends of Harry fame. In the late ‘80’s No Friends of Harry were one of South Africa’s foremost rock bands, notching up chart hits in spite of an uncompromisingly non-conformist stance that saw them at loggerheads with the music industry for much of their long, varied and contentious career. The band disbanded in September 1998 when their bassist emigrated to Scotland. Three and a half years later Rob McLennan, vocalist and guitarist for the band, is back with tracks for a brand new album, due for imminent release. The songs are poignant and powerful, stripped down, yet intense. At times the songs are gently wistful - at others, they bristle with cynicism and understated menace. He will be performing with an eclectic assortment of musicians, including ex-NFOH lead guitarist Ian Wiggins. The Bassline is in 7th Street, Melville (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues). Admittance is R30. Doors open at 8pm.
