This is a very clever virus as it gets you to it's dirty work for it! These programmes that YOU remove are usually necessary for the running of Windows and can be detrimental to your computer's health. 2 rules for checking the validity of a genuine virus warning: 1. A genuine virus warning will always give you an official website address where info can be verified. For example: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html 2. A genuine virus warning will NEVER ask you to tell everyone in your address book. So don't tell anybody that we gave you this advice, however you are most welcome to tell your friends where you get your weekly fix of music news, views and reviews. Anneline was raped in Johannesburg, and now has full-blown HIV/AIDS, and is seriously ill and weak - in addition to being in severe financial difficulties. Patric van Blerk and Ray Joseph are organising a 'Concert For Anneline’ at On Broadway in Green Point, on Wed evening June 5, with the Rockets and Tjommies in residence. The Rockets would be prepared to give musical backing, where possible, and Russell Shapiro of On Broadway has graciously made the venue available for the benefit concert. It is however requested of those artists wishing to appear, to try to provide their own backing and/or backing tracks. The organisers request their participation, in any form they see fit, to help Anneline - because, rather than ..."better days before her", it is more a case of... "Paradise is closing down". We look forward to your soonest response. Still maintaining a very high and respected profile on the Cape theatre scene, especially with charity productions of all kinds, "Pharaoh" Collison had his production van stolen from outside his Oranjezicht home. The van, containing a lifetime’s worth of equipment, was later recovered empty and wheel-less. Many of Alvon Collison’s friends, including Mark Banks, Aviva Pelham, Bruce Millar, Richard Loring, Mark Lottering, and Pieter Dirk Uys (to really name a few!), will be staging a star-studded variety concert on Sunday evening, and all are invited to attend. Tickets are R100/80 and are available from Artscape Dial-A Seat at 021 421 7695 or from Computicket: 083 915 8000 Other inquiries: 021 461 9448 ----------------- TRAGEDY FOR LADYSMITH LEADER Nellie Shabalala, the wife of Ladysmith Black Mambazo leader, Joseph Shabalala, has been murdered at their home in Clermont, Pinetown in KwazuluNatal. An unnamed assailant fired shots at the couple, killing Mrs Shabalala and injuring her husband in the hand. This is the second killing to shock the Shabalala family since Headman Shabalala, Joseph’s younger brother, was also gunned down in Pinetown in 1991. Nellie Shabalala was a loved and respected local pastor as well as a singer and leader of the choral group Woman Of Mambazo which has just released a CD. The police said that a R50 000 reward had been offered for information leading to the arrest of the killer and that a special task force had been set up to investigate the inexplicable and tragic assault. ---------------- KOOS EN AN AT VODACOM’S ‘SQUARE TUNES’ CONCERT 25th May, Hatfield Square Pretoria. Belgian singer/pianist An Pierlè will be adding to an already impressive line-up when she performs at Vodacom’s ‘Square Tunes’ concert at Hatfield Square on Saturday 25 May, alongside Tweak, Scicoustic, Blues Broers, Cutting Jade, Moodphase5ive, Koos Kombuis and Citrus. Koos Kombuis will be using the opportunity to launch his long-awaited new album ‘Equilibrium’ (see ‘New Releases’ and ‘Ruk En Rol’). An Pierle plays mellow pop with warm and exciting songwriting, and melodies that are never as predictable as one expects. This is complemented by interesting acoustic sounds and production techniques by the likes of Koen Giesen and Karel de Backer (He produced Belgian band Zita Swoon who performed at the Oppikoppi festival in 2000). So far An has released two albums with Warner Bros - ‘Mud Stories’, and her latest release, ‘Helium Sunset’. ‘Mud Stories’ sold in excess of 23,000 copies in Belgium alone and indications are that the new album will do even better. This being An’s introductory trip to South Africa, the plan is for the band to return to Oppikoppi’s Premix and Plunge Festivals in Pretoria from 30 August - 8 September. This brief sojourn is augmented by club dates with the Blues Broers and An at Café Barcelona on Friday 24th May, and the Bassline in Melville on Sun 26th May. Adding even more spice to the event, two lucky winners will each receive a brand new Motorola cellphone, courtesy of the Vodashop in Hatfield Mall. To enter the competition, collect an entry form from the Vodashop in Hatfield Mall (Shop no. 27), complete and return the form to the shop, or place it in the entry box at the concert. The draw will take place at the show at 8pm, and winners must be present to claim their prize. The stage is set for an unforgettable tune-laden afternoon at Hatfield Square. Dream on, julle ouens!" from Koos Kombuis - 'Seks, Drugs & Boeremusiek'. Since their first gig at the TUKS Jool '99, Not My Dog have become one of the premier hardcore/hip hop outfits in South Africa. With their latest album, ‘Braai Vibes’ due for release towards the end of June, the album already features two hit singles, ‘I Told You’ and ‘Dodgy Dog’, both of which went to No 1 on 5fm's Modern Rock Chart. Not My Dog will play a national tour in July and after playing or headlining all the major festivals in South Africa they'll be leaving for a short tour of Europe in June. They'll be playing the Fierce Festival http://www.fiercefestival.co.uk on June 2 in Brockwell Park, London with other SA bands, BOO! and Dorp, and Australian bands Midnight Oil, Regurgitator and Spiderbait and The Underworld in Camden on the 7th of June. Germany, Belgium and Netherlands dates still to be confirmed. Be sure to catch Not My Dog at the following SA venues in May: 24 May - Cool Runnings - Wonderboom 25 May - Roxy Rhythm Bar - Melville ------------------ BLACK NOISE SIGN DEAL IN SWEDEN Cape Flats hip hop outfit Black Noise have just returned from a two-month Swedish tour with news that they have signed a recording deal with Swedish Record Label, Integral Music Group. A new album is expected to be released in early 2003, in conjunction with an international documentary about Capoeira and breakdancing. Black Noise took their "Heal the 'Hood" concept to schools in Sweden, discussing issues ranging from Cape Flats life, the good people and beauty of South Africa never seen on travel programmes, global racism, drug abuse, AIDS, capitalism vs ubuntu in South Africa, hip hop as a tool to address youth issues, developing skills in hip hop and the music industry. The Swedish tour started in Gothenburg schools, where the record label spotted Black Noises' powerful performance and community conscious positive message. Black Noise then participated in the European Abada Capoeira Championships by performing, doing breakdance workshops and entering breakdance competition against Ultimate Breakers, which they won. One of the Black Noise members also got graded with an orange belt. Black Noise toured 45 schools throughout northern Sweden. They also supplied the entertainment at the World Childrens' Prize, which was won by South Africa's hero, Nkosi Johnson. Then the entire tour culminated in a Heal the 'Hood concert, which gave exposure to MCs, DJs and Breakdancers from all the towns they visited. ‘Heal the 'Hood’ was such a huge success that 13 Swedish youth, male and female, breakdancers, lockers and DJs will attend the 3rd African Hip Hop Indaba in Cape Town, from the 17th July - 21st July 2002. The South African Breakdancing Championships, Battle of the Year, will take place on the 19th July as part of African Hip Hop Indaba and the money from tickets sales will send South Africa's best breakdancers to the World Breakdancing Champs in Germany to represent South Africa. This is the 6th year that Black Noise will send a team to the World Champs at which South Africa has won 3rd and 4th in 1997 and 2000 respectively. We do this event with or without sponsors. It is Cape Towns' beautiful people that send the best dancers to the world champs by merely attending the event. For tickets call 082 395 8125 The Swedes are interested in touring schools, exchanging ideas and teaching dance to youth from schools in Cape Town. Black Noise also intend starting "Heal the 'Hood" groups at schools throughout the Western Cape and later the rest of South Africa to encourage support for local talent and develop talent of youth. This will include recording rappers, singers, poets, comedians and putting artists’ drawings and designs in Da Juice Magazine. It also involves discussions to encourage respect for self and being AFRICAN. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- KOOS KOMBUIS - EQUILIBRIUM http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/koos_equilibrium.html After a string of greatest hits, live and tribute albums, Koos Kombuis has finally got round to releasing his first wholly original album this century. Originally and provisionally titled ‘Op Die Plaas’, this 15-song collection sees the light of day as ‘Equilibrium’ (signs of a beautiful mind maybe?) and includes the Afrikaans rock tribute, ‘Sestien Jaar Met ‘n Vals Kitaar’; a song to his new son Simon called ‘Luierliedjie’; and other titles including ‘My Apologie’, ‘Equilibrium met Lithium’, ‘African Skyline’, ‘Oorlog Van Die Lem’, and ‘Op die Plaas’ . The backing is supplied by the Benguela trio of Ross Campbell (d), Brydon Bolton (b) and Alex Bozas (g), and other guest musicians. ‘Equilibrium’ was produced by Jürgen von Wechmar at the Sunset Studios and is released on the Rhythm Records label. (for more see ‘Ruk En Rol’ section below). (SS) Koos Kombuis http://rock.co.za/legends/kooskombuis -------------------- 3 SPEED - OF ENGINES AND EARTHWORMS This Johannesburg teenage trio’s debut 6-song EP draws a sweet line between The Waterboys, The Chills, and Prince Harry Potter. Opening track ‘Waiting For The Morning’ is a bouncy pop-rock ballad with rough guitars, fey vocals, and harmonicas spread all over the choruses. And then things get nicely weird with the fantasy-prog of songs like ‘Talk To The Trees’, ‘Murphy The Lemon Dealer’ and ‘Little’. Joshua Ackerman, Barry Sherman, and Gad ‘Gizmo’ de Coombes self-produced ‘Of Engines And Earthworms’ under the watchful eye of Ian Osrin in the Digital Cupboard Studios. The diverse spread of styles and influences is obvious and explainable. Joshua Ackerman is the son of Jon, for many years the dedicated owner of Street Records in Braamfontein. Imagine growing up in that house with all that music around - it shows. 3 Speed have a fresh and confident sound and plenty of skill, and they know and show their roots, which is always a good combination when a young band is starting out. A very promising start, wait till they get to 5 Speed! (SS) -------------------- RÉANA Gut-wrenching and challenging Gospel Rock from the not-yet-21 year old Réana Nel. I first heard her powerful voice and vocal range on 'Ryg My Lippe Toe' off the excellent 'Draadloos' compilation released late last year. Her debut CD was released in September 2001. This is a bilingual album, and Namibian-born Réana seems equally at home in English or Afrikaans. Her influences include Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan and she sings her self-penned songs with confidence and conviction. She is ably supported on this album by musicians of the calibre of Mauritz Lotz, Denny Lalouette, Bruce Wallace & David Klaasen. (BC) Read an interview with Réana by Fanus Pienaar below under the 'Ruk 'n Rol' section. More info at: http://rock.co.za/legends/2000puls/reana.html ------------- COMPILATIONS ------------- VARIOUS - CAPE TOWN 2AM - JUST LOUNGING ‘Cape Town 2am’ isn’t a late-nite radio or TV show, an all-hours club, nor is it a soundtrack. It is, as we are led to believe from the packaging and musical contents, a musical state of mind experienced exclusively by the legendary night folk of this very laid back city. This collection of tracks by a list of the coolest digital musos in Cape Town is on the new Sheer sub-label, ‘Ready Rolled’. Any similarity to the "African Dope" label, and their recent, similar, and very successful ‘African Dope Volume 1’ collection, is, one hopes, purely coincidental although that particular bandwagon may need new shocks soon.. But we do have Felix Laband (‘Run Alive Run’), Kalahari Surfers (‘Kicked By The Ball’) and Markus Wormstorm (‘Old Dirtye’) representing the African Dope label, so it seems everyone’s still choms and working together so that we all can share in this musical bounty. ‘Cape Town 2AM’ serves up 17 tasty late-nite "lounge" instrumentals filled with sound clips (Neville Chamberlin’s ‘Winds Of Change’ speech on ‘Old Dirtye’), and the usual menu of electronic loops, beats, blips, squiggles and one-line melodies. There’s also a scattering of bigger names - Jazzworx (‘Mr Martin’) and the slow 4/4play of Max Normal’s ‘Good Old Fashioned Loving’) - among emerging class acts like Toine Scholtz (‘Tigerdreams’), Anti Hero (‘Feel’), and Hammerhead (‘Mother Earth’). If you like your lounging-hour tunes short, clinical, repetitive and lyric-free, then try this. One man’s hip is another man’s Rohypnol, I guess. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER FRANK ZAPPA (perilous pterodactyl) Part 1 of 4 To describe Frank Zappa, one would have to cross the cigar smoking Groucho Marx with a touch of acid and the entire dimension of Aldus Huxley's "Doors of perception". Then again what you're left with would be an unpredictable morsel of dinosaur meat with enough poison to bring down at least half of the American nation. Frank's roots are derived from Sicilian and Greek parents who arrived in California in 1950. His first group the Blackouts were formed in his teen years with his school class buddy Don van Vliet. Later to evolve as the Soots, Don van Vliet and Frank would perform standard R&B contemporaries of the day. It was during this time that Frank christened Don as Captain Beefheart. Sadly this short lived knighting only lasted months before an emotional departure, resulting in Frank forging his own career in management and production. In the early days he virtually performed under a number of guises namely the Masters and later the Soul Giants which would eventually evolve into the Mothers of Invention. Frank was prolific in song writing and arrangement, which resulted in his own production and arrangement for a western called "Run home slow" providing enough finance to build a studio in Cucamonga, California. In 1965 Frank officially removed Ray Hunt in the Soul Giants who he was managing at the time. He renamed the group Mothers of Invention and aptly included himself in the group as guitarist. By 1966 the group miraculously maintained a permanent residency at the Whiskey A-Go-Go. It was during this time that the group was signed to MGM by producer Tom Wilson. The Mothers of Invention were very much in the spirit of another east coast consortium called the Fugs. The early stages of the Mothers also included Henry Vestine who eventually found fame and fortune with the blues group Canned Heat. Continued next week... Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music VARIOUS - TASSENBERG ALL-STARS 2 (Trippy Grape, Trip 014) I sure hope the 'Tassenberg All-Stars' becomes a regular series chronicling an active rock scene. I enjoy the first 'Tassenberg' CD, but tend to favor this second one a bit. The production on 'Tassenberg 2' seems a little richer. It has the immediate live sound of #1 with a tad more fullness, though with less audience presence. However, the first 'Tassenberg' has a more intimate sound enabling one to imagine drinking a bottle near the stage. The CD's tone-setter is Valiant Swart. He bursts through the speakers with a modern classic-sounding rock 'n' roll song. His second track, 'Ware Liefde', features a country guitar sort of like Jimmy Buffet-does-country-in-Afrikaans. But his 'Vloek Van Die Kitaar' is straight ahead guitar rock, Valiant-style. Most of the performers on 'Tassenberg 2' come back around on the disc for two or three numbers -- and in various guises, the great Piet Botha, Jack Hammer, and Jonathan Martin even get four tracks. Beeskraal, a band with panache, has three tracks of their own style of Boererock. These guys play cool SA country rock on 'Strate Van Pretoria', the heady 'Zol', and 'Noord-Transvaal'. However, some bands only get one track. The excellent Spinnekop is represented by the thunderous heavy song 'Binneland In'; Frosted Orange by a thoughtful piano and guitar instrumental; Akkedis by the big klank 'Voortvlugtend'. Not My Dog might not be 100% to my taste, but their music engages the attention as rock should. After name-checking some of the greats appearing on 'Tassenberg 2', Mikanic close out this live set from the Tassenberg Stalteater stage with a long, up-tempo, and pretty acoustic number titled 'Sweets'. All listened to, this is a worthy CD. Not only as fine music, but as a chronicle of the changing times and a strongly creative music scene. As a Yankee living in Texas, a nice uitlander ou slowly learning some Afrikaans, it seems to me that SA rock in general is vibrant, creative, and rocks in Kurt-pleasing ways. And inside that lively rock scene, the Afrikaner musos are really into what they're doing. How about a lekker 'Tassenberg 3', Dirk? Baie dankie, y'all. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music VOËLVRY DIE TOUR (Sheer, SHIF 002) Sometime in 1989 a new political party came to the fore in South Africa. Although they never seemed to have an obvious leader, power seemed to lie mostly with 3 men, Mr A le Toit, Mr J Kerkorrel and Mr B Niemand. Calling themselves the Alternatiewe Afrikaner Party they embarked on a nationwide roadshow and engaged in a vitriolic attack on the current government. An overview of their Voëlvry manifesto, that has recently been made public follows. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT When it came to television, people were encouraged to 'Sit dit Af' particularly 'Die Nuus' where bad news is delivered with a smile. As an alternative (or alternatiewe), it is suggested that 'Almal Moet Gerook Raak' or take a 'Vakansie in Lusaka'. DEFENCE Mr Niemand put forward a proposal that troopies become better acquainted with their superior's in his document entitled 'Hou My Vas Korporaal', suggesting that this may help prevent a symptom identified by Mr le Toit as 'Bomskok Babelaas'. TRANSPORT Two modes of transport are recommended. Either drive a 'BMW' or 'n 'Ossewa'. Reading between the lines, it would seem that the BMW is for formal snootynosed occasions while the Ossewa could be described as a jolmobile. FINANCE Mr le Toit suggests dancing with cash machines in the 'Autobank Vastrap' while Mr Kerkorrel adapts the Swedish winner takes it all policy reminding wouters that 'Barend Vat Ons Geld'. It is difficult to establish the exact effect the rock 'n rollercoaster ride of this party had on the political history of South Africa, but it's probably safe to say that it did affect the Tassenberg share price. Many subsequent parties have released manifestos based on this ground breaking one, but none as important. As for the leaders of the party, well Mr le Toit has concentrated on domestic matters (especially those around the kitchen), Mr Niemand sadly passed away, while the last that was heard of Mr Kerkorrel is "dat hy 'n cabbie-ry". This newly released copy of the manifesto, gives one a view into those heady political times and an insight into the political movement known as Alternatiewe Afrikaners. Sy haal aan: "To give without loving" is maklik, maar "to love without giving" is onmoontlik. Daarom daag sy jongmense uit om op te hou om selfgesentreerd te leef: "Gee veral vir jou ouers liefde, en jy sal dit dubbeld terugkry." Haar CD verwoord die oorwinning in Jesus - om waarlik in Hom vry te wees en verryk te word deur jouself te gee!
