The band’s recent album, ‘Odd Times’, is regarded as the best of their three to date, following 1998’s ‘Take Me To Your Fishmonger’ and 1999’s ‘Ticks On George’. ‘Extra Larry’, the quirky first single, and opening track off ‘Odd Times’, is currently attracting a lot of interest and radio play. Sons Of Trout will be taking their refreshing brand of SA Celtic-ska-pop (you try define it!) off to London to play the SA Food and Wine Festival in Richmond on Saturday 6 July. They will also be playing at the Kings Head, Fulham on 13 July with more gigs still to be confirmed for London. The band will be performing at the Grahamstown Festival in July before embarking on their London Tour. Their Grahamstown shows will be at a venue called ‘Die Taphuis’, where SAFM runs a venue called ‘Late Night Live’ during the Festival. These shows will be on the 29, 30, and 31 July 2002. The band will then be embarking on a National Tour from mid-August until the beginning of October. All details and dates available from http://www.sonsoftrout.com ‘Extra Larry’ is available on MP3 at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 ----------------- IAN HENDERSON’S ‘FREEFALL’ TOUR Ian Henderson’s outstanding debut album ‘Freefall’ is set to capitalise on the very positive critical reactions it has received from the SA rock media and a growing band of fans. Henderson will be undertaking a five date tour to promote his new album and give Gauteng fans a chance to catch this new KwazuluNatal talent. ‘Beautiful Life’, the first single off ‘Freefall’, has now been playlisted across the country, with SAFM and 5FM being the latest to add their vote of confidence. European ears have also been tuning in with ‘Crash Landing’ being played on P3, the Norwegian national radio station, and a review of the album is about to appear in the national Norwegian media. The ‘Freefall’ CD Launch Tour got underway last Friday at the Hilton College Theatre outside Pietermaritzburg. With a great 6-piece band, and supported by talented young guitarist, Guy Buttery, the show set alight the unconventional surroundings of the upmarket theatre. Ian and his band then move on to Gauteng's top venues from 5-8 June. The highlight is the media launch of the new album, ‘Freefall’, at The Bassline on Wednesday 5th June. Seats are selling out fast for this concert, so phone. The full tour schedule reads as follows: June Wed 5: JHB - Bassline, Melville ** Media Launch ** June Thurs 6: Pretoria - Up the Creek June Fri 7: JHB - Blues Room, Sandton (with Cutting Jade) June Sat 8: JHB - Showcase, Northgate (with Sunways and Jo Day) ‘Freefall' is finally available online at SA CD shop Oneworld: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=fg010570 Hear the MP3 of ‘Beautiful Life’ at http://www.sarockdigest.com/MP3 Ian Henderson http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/ian_henderson_freefall.html ---------------- AULD ADDS ABAVUKI AND STARK RAVING SANE TO CAPE TOWN BILL The two confirmed support bands for Robin Auld’s homecoming gig at The River Club on Friday 14 June have been announced. Opening the bill will be Abavuki, an emerging and unique marimba, brass, and percussion/vocal 10-person ensemble from Langa. The group’s name means ‘Wake up early birds' and their musical hybrid has an energetic Latin American feel, not the usual result of such an African-based combination. Robin Auld invited the group on to the bill for his first band gig in Cape Town since 1994 after hearing a live recording of the Abavuki’s performance at their Long Street club residency. Joining Abavuki on the bill will be Stark Raving Sane, another unusual new Cape Town group who have worked with Syd Kitchen and are currently building a strong following around the Peninsula. The three members of Stark Raving Sane create their genre-defying music using just guitar, percussion and didgeridoo. They will be playing songs off their debut 2001 album, ‘The Unknown’ as well as tracks off their upcoming second album, due in the next few months. Bright Blue’s drummer, Peter Cohen, and bass player Nelson Barbosa will again complete the Robin Auld Band line-up for this final date on the ‘Dream Of Birds’ national tour. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- ELLORA GOSH RELEASES WINNING SONG Ellora Ghosh is 22-year old Cape Town Fine Arts student whose song titled ‘How Do You...?’ won the ‘5FM Virgin Colours Liquid Dreams’ demo competition. The song was produced by Ziggy and released by David Gresham Records and is attracting a lot of current airplay. The song (and a remix) has also been included on a bonus disc attached to the new ‘Playlisted’ compilation on Sony. The ‘Playlisted’ CD has SA artists like Wonderboom (who also worked on Ellora’s track), Tweak, Cutting Jade, Saron Gas and ReddAngel alongside international names like Nickelback, Five For Fighting, Feeder, and Wheatus. Ellora was born in Calcutta and from age 4 travelled extensively around Southern Africa before settling in Cape Town where she studied at UCT. The slightly oriental inflections on the alluring single reflect Ellora’s abiding taste for Bengali music. ‘How Do You...?’ was also the popular choice of the international judging panel for the 5FM competition. ---------------- PAUL HANMER -‘NAIVASHA’ This fourth solo album from piano maestro Paul Hanmer is released on the Sheer Sound label, and is a musical dedication to the people in Paul’s life and pays homage to them in tracks like ‘Fanfare’, which is dedicated to his wife Angela. The album takes its title ‘Naivasha’ from the lake of the same name in Kenya where, for Paul, the horn voices of McCoy Mrubata and Marcus Wyatt echo the exceptional bird-life, which congregates in this particular area. The musicians on the album include Barry van Zyl, Basi Mahlasela, McCoy Mrubata, Marcus Wyatt, Kevin Gibson, Sydney Mnisi, and Denis Lalouette. Paul has previously recorded with the likes of Tananas, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri, McCoy Mrubata, Unofficial Language, Moses Molelekwa, Fana Zulu, Khaya Mahlangu, Themba Mkhize, Vusi Khumalo and Pops Mohamed. He also formed part of and toured with Tony Cox’s ‘Cool Friction Band’ and worked on a production with Pops Mohamed, which was showcased at the ‘Main’ during the Grahamstown Festival. ------------------- SIMON VAN GEND - ‘UNHINGED’ This independently produced and released album originated when Cape Town performer Simon van Gend was approached to make some of his songs available to his circle of family, friends and fringe fans both in SA and overseas. Some of this album was recorded simply in ‘Nebraska’ style while Van Gend was travelling in Italy, and the balance was recorded at various locations in Cape Town, eventually being finished off at the Front Ear Studios with Ben Amato. When it was completed, 350 copies of ‘Unhinged’ were made available and were quickly snapped up by those who had requested it, as well as a swelling group of fans. Along with requests for copies of ‘Unhinged’ were pleas for another album. So Van Gend offered these fans the opportunity to participate in the production of the next album by ordering copies in advance, thereby helping to finance it. But until that happens, you’ll have to search out a copy of this very laid back SA folk album. All these songs were written by Van Gend, and ‘Unhinged’ includes many of his live favourites like ‘Ingabangaba’, ‘Drie Rand’ and the languid first single, ‘Dreamboats’. The album features Simon Van Gend on rhythm guitar and vocals with his regular live line-up of Ben Amato on flute, lead guitar, and pennywhistle, and Eric Michot on bass. This is the same trio that has been drawing a steady stream of fans to their ‘first Friday of the month’ gigs at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory. There’s one of those happening this Friday 7 June, and this will be the first gig featuring the group’s new line-up with the addition of Clement Benny on drums. ‘Unhinged’ is currently available c/o the Simon Van Gend website at http://www.24clicks.com/simon or email mailto:simonvangend@24clicks.com for copies of ‘Unhinged’ and to order your copy of the next album. ‘Dreamboats' is available on MP3 at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 The upcoming gig at The Independent Armchair Theatre on Friday is a Smoke Signals recommended gig of the week. Email mailto:smokesignals@sarockdigest.com with your name, and the name of the artist and venue, and the first ten emails received will get freebies for Friday night’s show. ------------------- TERENCE REIS - ‘BILENE’ First let’s get the pronunciations correct, that’s Reis (rhymes with "beige") and his album is called ‘Bilene’ (that’s "Bee-Lenn"). Terence (of Portuguese, Welsh and English descent!) came to South Africa via LM and Malawi. A Drama degree at Wits led to an acting career of note as he became the "Reis" of the SA theatre scene. He starred in a string of dramatic productions from ‘Macbeth’ to ‘Death Of A Salesman’, took the leads in the SA productions of ‘Hair’ and ‘The Buddy Holly Story’, won numerous acting nominations and awards for his stage and TV performances, and worked and appeared with the Not The Midnight Mass group. But it seems there’s still a rocker itching to get out and Reis has been regularly writing for and performing with The Cuban Doctors, and has now recorded and released his debut album. To do this he called in a mixture of musicians - Garth Victor (k), Rob Watson (d), Efrain Toro (perc) - and put Graham Currie in charge of the whole operation. Currie, who also plays bass on the album (as he did with Big Sky behind Rodriguez on the first SA tour), programmed ‘Bilene’ with Craig Dodds, and got the legendary Peter Thwaites to master it. All these songs are originals and in many places approximate the album that could have resulted had JJ Cale and Mark Knopfler ever pooled their talents - the kind of album that could possibly lure Chris Prior out of retirement. It’s a big-hearted, crystal-sounding, adult-orientated folk rock album that starts getting very warm and familiar after a while. ‘Bilene’ opens strongly with ‘Perfect Love’, a stirring folk rock song with violins and gruff vocals. Then follows a long second song called ‘Everything Okay’, which has a 4-minute guitar instrumental before the lyrics even begin. The balance of the tracks on ‘Bilene’ are similar bright and optimistic folk-rock ballads, and with Reis’s actor’s ear for catchy lyrics always apparent, it’s a lasting and entertaining piece of work. (SS) Tracklisting: ‘Perfect Love’, ‘Everything’s Okay’, ‘Kathy And Simone’, ‘Keep The Money’, ‘Leyahn’, ‘Gone’, ‘How It Is’, ‘I Love You The Whole World’, ‘Trouble In Paradise’, ‘Up On The Wheel’, ‘Steelworks’. Available at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Listen to the MP3 of ‘Perfect Love’ at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- New releases available at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Jazz: Paul Hanmer - Naivasha Cool jazz from this master pianist! Epic soundscapes and beautiful melodies are the order of the day and reasserts Paul Hanmer as one of SA's top musicians. It's JAZZ JAZZ JAZZ. Marcus Wyatt - Africans In Space Surprisingly the title of this album has nothing to do with South Africa's Mark Shuttleworth's recent trip into space. It is in fact a tribute to the large amounts of space afforded to inhabitants of this great continent. The album is hard to describe but just like Zim Ngqawana it's and true jazz album. The track styles vary and take you on a musical journey that has a distinct European feel! Moses Molelekwa - Wa Mpona As mentioned in our last mail this is a collection of the late great Moses Molelekwa's work that include some unreleased and live material as well as a young Moses Khumalo and Amampondo vocalist Lungiswa. Stunning is a word that comes to mind when listening to this album! Dance: African Dope Vol 1 African Dope, the label that brought us Felix Laband, Krushed and Sorted and Mood Phase 5ive release another winner. Pioneering a sound that is new to the SA music scene the African Dope crew have done us proud, with music that can be best described as quirky, slightly obscure but all in all damn funky! Cape Town 2 AM The "chill out/lounge" album has become a regular feature in modern music charts and this album should be no different. A carefully compiled selection of groovy laid back house, beats and breaks and trip hop. An album that is on regular rotation in the Oneworld office, SA's Buddah Bar? Pop & Rock: Freedoms Children - Galactic Vibes RE-RELEASE Classic rock does not get more classic than this! Freedoms Children had a big seller on Oneworld with the Astra album (deleted since last year) and this is sure to follow it's lead. In true RetroFresh style this is one for the collectors, with lots of info and rare pics! Kelvin Declined - Kelvin Declined Rhythm Records have been busy lately with a string of New Releases that all seem to have the potential of doing well. A new band with a bright future in hard rock who already have a big following in their home town of Cape Town. Frosted Orange - My Love Is A Leopard Another release from Rhythm Records and with two of the three members being part of the Valiant Swart band and the Blues Broers there is no shortage of talent! The album is a blend of blues and spacious indie rock, very nice indeed! Township Pop: Lazarus Kgagudi - Indahouse A master of township pop from yester year releases an album of his tracks remixed with a certain house feel. The balance between house and pop was achieved well and the album is sure to take you on a nostalgic journey without sounding stale! Mbongeni Ngema - The Zulu Not really a new release but because it has just recently been added to the catalogue we thought we would let you know it is available. The man behind Sarafina does it again. The play is based on the battle of blood river (Isandlwana) and features traditional Zulu dances and chants. Kwaito: Slick One - Traditional House Kwaito A new and refreshing direction for the Kwaito scene, this album is slick. Great baselines and well produced music toped by smooth vocals making it a great dancing or listening album. The album also features other talented artists like SAMA nominees Jazzworx, AK and Mapapantsi. Mzambiya - Heir To Throne A follow up to his From Zola To Hollywood album and another release from the Bulldawgz stable. The young Mzambiya, from the notorious suburb of Zola in Soweto (where many of SA's Kwaito stars are from) has released another hit album. The sound of tracks like Zola can often be heard blaring from sound systems all over Soweto and even had some TV airplay. Afrikaans: Koos Kombuis - Equilibrium What can be said about Koos that has not already been said. The undisputed king of Afrikaans folk rock, this album is sure to take off from where all his previous release have, a big seller and huge hit with the fans. Don't forget the recently release 'Voelvry' albums which also contain new and unreleased material. Brixton Moord En Roof Orkes - Spergebied A new band in the great tradition of Afrikaans rock that proves the genre is alive and well. This is an album about Rock And Roll in South Africa, slightly below the belt and controversial but that is without a doubt a part of it's appeal. With songs about the real life experiences of the band this is a sure fire hit! Gospel: Amadodana Ase Wesile - Kukh' Induli Eluhlaza Another release from the consistent gospel group and a must have for any fan of African gospel. Solly Moholo - Ranta E Wele The title means "Rand Depreciation" and the album goes into many of the bigger issues facing South Africa like the economy and politics in Zimbabwe. It however never strays from the strong Gospel theme that only Solly, a member of the ZCC group knows how to do! CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------ FRANK ZAPPA ------------ Part 3 of 4: The musicians within the Frank Zappa consortium were continually mobile and far too numerous to mention, but a certain amount of recognition has to be given to various talented maestros that were given enigmatic exposure by the Zappa camp. In particular there was Jean-Luc Ponty (violin), Shuggie Otis (bass), Don "Sugarcane" Harris (fiddle), George Duke (keyboards), Ron Selico (drums), the progressive fifties axe man Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Chester Thompson (future Genesis drummer), Lowell George (Little Feat), Jimmy Black and Gardner (Geromimo Black), Billy Mondi (Rhinoceros), Ingber (Fraternity of Man), Jim Fielder (Buffalo Springfield) and Mark Volman & Howard Kaylan & Jim Pons (ex-Turtles). To try and understand the history of Frank Zappa, who would play with a 50 piece orchestra as early as 1967 (‘Lumpy Gravy’)!, is as difficult as trying to decipher the genre and music category into which Zappa could fit. Frank's 1970 instrumental album, ‘Hot Rats’, was progressively a showcase for the Jean-Luc Ponty virtuoso. The understated ‘Peaches En Regalia’ single was clearly noted by the rising rock fraternity of the seventies. In 1970, Jean-Luc Ponty's ‘King Kong’ album, which was comprised of Zappa's compositions, was released to critical acclaim. For legal reasons, Zappa's name could not be listed as producer and guitarist. For many, the first time that they heard of Zappa was on the notorious Deep Purple rock anthem ‘Smoke On The Water’, where most of their equipment was destroyed in a fire at Switzerland's Montreux Casino. In 1972, The Mothers were banned from the Royal Albert Hall for obscenity (somebody should have explained the meaning of satire). Frank's three act rock opera, ‘Joe's Garage’, continually launched scathing attacks on his musical opponents. For your interest it should be noted that, over and above my personal opinion that ‘Trout Mask Replica’ by Captain Beefheart was far from the Coltrane experience, it is also this album where Don van Vliet accuses Frank of being a freak. The former tensions of this trauma came to healing on the 1975 ‘Bongo Fury’ album, where Zappa and Beefheart re-united. Continued next week... Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS - SURPASS THE POWERS (Epic CDEPC 8093) Some of the best rock that will ever be has already been made, and some of the best rock that will ever be has yet to be made. To me, that's a comforting thought. Which leads me to Springbok Nude Girls. An amazing band, really. They can open an album pounding harder than hard with 'X', then a few songs on sing and play delicately, as in 'Donatello' (most of 'Donatello' is delicate anyway), 'Un-EZ', or 'Baseball'. The Springbok Nude Girls mastered rock forms and made some great, yes great, rock songs in their body of work. However, I do prefer the big rock songs they careen through like some fast and complicated giant, such as 'Steel Man Soon'. These guys casually throw into songs licks and riffs that other bands would build songs on -- just when you think you know where the song is, they move it with some nice rocking surprise. ('Shot' is a good example of SNG variety-talent.) I suppose there are a few people who know all the world's rock scenes, but I don't know them. To me, SNG has their own sound and no one else's. If they were overtly influenced by any band, it is one I have not heard. 'Surpass the Powers' is a personal favorite of mine. But then, so are their 'Neanderthal' and 'Afterlifesatisfaction' CDs. The Nudies were the great Nude hope, weren't they? Fortunately, South Africa is never short on new hopes. The Springbok Nude Girls flow naturally from nice and pleasant to wild and aggressive. For example, they slide easily from 'Lips' to the threatening, thumping, and awe-inspiring 'Kill the World'. Futuristic sounding, or only as modern as tomorrow. The boys from Stellenbosch played a massive and solid wall of sound. They rank with the best and played my kind of rock music. Goddank vir klank. Springbok Nude Girls http://rock.co.za/legends/90s/springbok_nude_girls.html Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music DORP - TAP INTO THE SYSTEM Last weekend, Dorp launched their new CD 'Tap Into The System' at a slick gig at the Halfmoon in Putney. We were treated to the usual zany antics of Pieter Bezuidenhout as he bounced manically around the small stage. This was accompanied by some wicked and at times really funky guitar work from Kevin Kieswetter, some fine dj-ing from Fred and a solid bashing of the drums from Rob Driver. Computer images projected onto the wall behind the band gave the gig a professional touch. So on to the CD. The first thing I noticed is that it has been released on Contains Nuts Records which is quite apt as the band's lyrics and sounds are somewhat off the wall, but in an intriguing mixed bag (and slightly salted) kind of way. It's mostly macadamia and cashews here, with the occasional peanut, and not an almond in sight. Now that will only make sense if you know my taste in nuts, so suffice is to say I find macadamia's and cashew's addictive, peanuts somewhat more-ish and don't like almonds. Some of the cashews are 'The System' with it's 'They say it's perfect, cause it is' chorus, 'Razor Back' with it's weird lyrics like 'My Last Girlfriend She Had a Willy, there's something very wrong here' and the wonderful sampling of the French connection DJ Fred ("Felix Le Band") Caïou in Badoumbadoum. These tracks are all feisty, edgy and razor sharp. The peanuts are 'My Ride' which meanders a little, and 'Kitchen' which is some more studio noodling from DJ Fred. They take a little while to get into, but once tasted, you keep nibbling at them. Some of the samples are familiar with a snippet from Monty Python's 'The Meaning Of Life' where the doctor arrive at the operating theatre and comments 'Ah I see you have the machine that goes ping". An apt comment for an album full of high quality pings. But it's the sample of the southern accented dude saying 'I'm your Huckleberry' that leaves me completely frustrated as it's so familiar, but I can't remember which movie it's from. (Anyone out there that can help me?) The album doesn't have the frenetic madness of a Dorp gig, but it does have studio polish and smoothness to it. It's a wonderful album of drum 'n bass 'n funk 'n garage 'n dance. Not only does it contains nuts, the CD is shaped somewhat like a doughnut. This is the first sighting of an SA act in this corner of the Digest for a good few weeks. 1972 was the only year to see a change at the top, although it was a return to number 1 for Daniel Boone having relinquished the position to the group with the really long name for one week, while only 1977 and 1982 featured new entries into the top 5. In fact in 1987 it was only positions 3 and 4 that swapped places. 'Knowing Me Knowing You' was Abba 9th top 5 hit in a row. A remarkable run which included 5 number 1s. A couple of changes are made, aside from the fact that one is a sweet guitar ditty and the other a skankin' number. The opening words don't use the word "ain't" but "have not" -- those Rastas have long been known as persnickety, formal grammarians, and the first verse repeats right away. Joburg's getting a Goth club again, called Omega. Omega's website will be hosted on http://www.darklight.co.za but although you can already see it there and subscribe to the mailing list, it has a few gremlins that need to be sorted out. They’re a little busy at the moment (both at work as well as with the club's planning), but the site should be functional after the weekend. The opening of Omega is on the 15th of June - which is a Saturday night. On this night Atmosphere Control Unit will be playing from 21:00. For those of you living a little far or who would prefer not driving, a service has been offered to us known as "The Goth Box". A combi will pick people up all over the place and deliver them to the club - it will then leave to take you home at four in the morning. You have to book to use this service and it costs R20. Drinks, cigarettes and food will also be sold on The Goth Box. To book, phone John on (082) 220-9729. Here's the schedule for pickup: 7:00 - Mc Donald's - Hatfield 7:30 - Menlyn Shopping Centre Gate 7 (Ocean Basket) 8:00 - McDonald's Boksburg / East Rand Mall ------------------ STORME, LIVE AT SPRINGVALE BOXCAR DERBY DAY Popular local musician Storme will be performing at Springvale Primary School at their annual BoxCar Derby fundraiser on Saturday 8th of June at 13h00.
