(See 'Concerts' section below) ------------------ JO DAY SIGNS TO LEGEND MUSIC SA Jo Day, who has signed to Legend Music for the release of her new album 'icon', is regarded as one of South Africa's finest rock vocalists. She is also recognised as a superb live performer, prolific composer and highly versatile and in-demand studio voice. For the album, she worked with rock producer Jon Buckley. Two of the album's tracks have already been radio hits with 'I Believe' reaching number 2 on 5FM's Top 40, and 'Phone Booth' still receiving frequent airplay. The latest single, 'Remember', has just been play listed by 5FM. Jo began her singing career at 14, appearing in many types of bands from jazz to heavy metal all over the country. X-Rated, Chris Ghelakis Syndicate, and Loose Enz were three of the highly successful cover bands to which she lent her talents. Galvanized into action by the success of 'I Believe', Jo and Jon set about writing an entire album which evolved into 'icon', a hard-hitting (often below the belt) viewpoint on the ways in which the entertainment industry affects both fans and stars alike. The project has taken almost a year to complete and 'icon' will be available countrywide on June 18. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- KOOS KOMBUIS - 'EQUILIBRIUM' Although 'Equilibrium' is credited as a Koos Kombuis album, reading the sleeve notes, it seems that producer Albert du Plessis and Benguela had a large input into the first album of new material from the Bard van Gordon's Bay since the seminal 1997 works 'Blameer dit op Apartheid' and 'Madiba Bay'. Koos does what he does best and that it to provide the lyrics. These cover various topics from a sort of tribute to the "alternative" Afrikaans movement in 'Sestien Jaar met 'n Vals Kitaar' through a song to his young son 'Luierliedjie' or just sommer venting in 'Jy Vas Nog Nooit In Langstraat As Dit Reën Nie". Benguela and Albert du Plessis build around the basic kitaar track that Koos laid down, adding atmospheric guitar, piano, contrabass and occasional accordion. The sound is intriguing, mostly downbeat and quite melancholic. This melancholy feel does not make this an immediately accessible album. It took a few listens for the beauty of 'Wrapped Around The Moon' to shine through or for me to hum along to the chorus of 'Sestien Jaar'. However, the dub remix of 'Lalie' is, probably because one is already familiar with it, one that has immediate appeal. Still, it's worth the effort to persevere, as this becomes a quite rewarding album with time. The big question is what should one read into the words on the closing track 'Bach by die Voortrekkermonument' where Koos starts by saying 'Welcome by my laaste concert ooit' and closes the track by singing 'hou op met my sukkel want ek is 'n afgetreede musikant' and follows this by saying 'Bye'. Is this the last we are to hear from the man? Who knows, but one thing I have surmised from reading about Koos is that he doesn't like people to take his lyrics as gospel, so I guess we will have to let the passing of time answer that question. (JS) Listen to 'Sestien Jaar' at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 by kind permission of Koos and Rhythm Records. Koos Kombuis http://rock.co.za/legends/kooskombuis ------------------ KAY VEE GOES SOLO Kay Vee is known to SA fans as the vocalist for popular SA band Fly, a band that emerged as a prominent fixture on the music scene during 2000 and 2001 with performances at Woodstock, Oppikoppi, Splashy Fen and the Rustlers Easter Festival. Kay Vee's decision to go solo was borne out of a sense of urgency to pursue her dream, coupled with her musical upbringing. The meeting with producer Jon Buckley was the result of a series of bizarre co-incidences, beginning with the producer's memories of her from an earlier performance at the Emerging Sounds competition. In a casual conversation he mentioned to a friend that he would love to record with her. By a lucky chance, the friend was also acquainted with Kay Vee and from there the rest is history. 'Time', the first single off the CD EP has been charting countrywide since its release in February 2002. This, her first solo release, reflects a significant departure from her previous recordings, moving from the rock genre into pop. The release features three tracks and two remixes and is an uplifting, melodic fusion of dance grooves and Kay's smooth vocal harmonies. Kay Vee will resume performances in September 2002, to coincide with the release of her full album on Circus Records. For further information, please contact Gillian Ezra at Frontline Entertainment Management on 011 673 5787 or mailto:Gillian@fem.co.za ----------------- STARKRAVINGSANE - 'THE UNKNOWN' From the band's name you'd expect a nu-metal punk thrash, but what you get is a refreshing and very chilled contrast. 'The Unknown' is a delicate and skilled slice of trippy local folk compositions, all performed by this rising Cape Town trio. StarkRavingSane formed in the Kalk Bay area in early-2001 and have built a faithful following from a string of gigs at The Troubadour, The Kronendal, the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, CD Wherehouse, the recent Barleycorn Festival, and this year's Splashy Fen Festival, where they repeated their acclaimed performance from the 2001 event. The band is Matthew Rice on guitar and vocals with James Kaye on percussion, and Ronan Skillen on didgeridoo and other assorted percussion - like his innovative "stones in a Marmite jar" instrument! Together these three musicians have produced a laid-back brand of relaxed head music, a gentle version of the early SA trip-folk groups like Nagual and THC. Many of these songs, like 'A New Groove', 'The Sun', and 'The Road', are slow-growers rewarding listeners patience with intricate instrumental patterns and a light melodic touch. 'Pleez Man' (it's about the cops) is the closest StarkRavingSane get to a conventional arrangement. The album was recorded by Malcolm Aberdein at M.A.R.S Studios in Woodstock on June 18 and 21 2001, which was the day of the solstice and total solar eclipse.... ------------------ ASHTON NYTE - 'DIRT SENSE' Exactly 2 years to the month, Ashton Nyte (the man behind The Awakening) releases his second solo album. Stephen Segerman recently referred to Ashton on SAFM as the "chameleon of SA rock" and that's exactly what he is. His influences and styles are many and varied; Lou Reed, Bono, David Bowie (another chameleon), Tom Waits and Andrew Eldritch all play a part in the Ashton Nyte persona. 'Dirt Sense' is a powerful album with strong tunes and hard-hitting lyrics. As the quote on the back cover says: "Long live dirty Rock 'n Roll". Listen to 'Stained' at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 More info at http://rock.co.za/legends/2000plus/ashton_nyte.html ------------- COMPILATIONS ------------- SA STARS MAKE WORLD CUP (MUSIC) SQUAD It's the World Cup again, time for great football and the new 'Official album of the 2002 FIFA World Cup' compilation. It has the official tournament anthem by Vangelis (called, um, 'Anthem'), the official tournament song by Anastacia called 'Boom', and lots of other football-related pop from Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Lopez, Die Toten Hosen (seriously?), some big names from other participating nations, and two songs from the Bafanaland. They are 'Zimbi 'ndaba' from the very cool kwaito duo, Brothers Of Peace (Oscar "Oskido" Mdlongwa and Bruce "Dope" Sebitlo), and hot SA trio Bongo Maffin's emotive reworking of the well-known hymn 'In The Morning Of My Life' which the trio renamed as 'Brave, Strong & True'. We've been watching most of the games so far and haven't heard a trace of any of these songs played anywhere, apart from during the opening ceremony. Definitely a good thing as we prefer lots of good football with very little commentary, and even less in-studio waffling. But this is still a fine, value for money, 20-track memento of this year's tournament. -------- SINGLES -------- MORE FOOTIE-RELATED MUSIC - ELVIS IS (RIGHT) BACK Elvis Presley is today on the verge of another career milestone, nearly 25 years after his death. Presley's classic song, 'A Little Less Conversation', which was re-mixed by progressive DJ JXL, has been released worldwide by RCA/BMG as a commercial single during June. The track has been used as the soundtrack to Nike's already highly talked-about, world-wide advertising campaign for 'Secret Tournament' that began airing worldwide on the 4th of April and is scheduled to run throughout this summer's soccer World Cup. The UK was the first territory to release the single and the reaction has been a mixture of delight, surprise and respect. It has already received exceedingly high radio support, with the majority of national and regional stations (including Capital FM and Radio 1) adding it to their playlists over 6 weeks up-front. The June 3rd release on CD and vinyl will include a radio edit version, an extended version and the original Presley song. This marks the beginning of a whole year of Elvis activity within Bertelsmann, BMG's parent company, culminating in the release of 'ELV1S 30 #1 Hits', the first ever collection of 30 Presley number one singles on one CD. --------------- NEW ZEN ARCADE SINGLE 'Letter From A Friend' is Zen Arcade's eagerly awaited new follow-up single to 'Crazy Over You' and 'Step Back', the two singles off their successful 2001 debut rock album, 'Snowflake'. With a typically unforgettable hook and a classic build-up to an intense finish, 'Letter From A Friend' is set to recapture the band's momentum - elegantly walking the razor edge between unsettlingly dense layers of sound and pure melodic pop rock sensibilities. Listen to the new song now: Visit http://www.zenarcade.co.za and click on the "Promo's" link. ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- Buy South African CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------ FRANK ZAPPA ------------ Part 4 of 4 During the late-Seventies ex-Cream bass guitarist Jack Bruce would move between The Mothers and a latter day Soft Machine line-up. By the time the eighties had arrived, Zappa had mastered a highly sophisticated synthesizer called the Synclavier which he utilised for his 'Jazz From Hell' album. 'Jazz From Hell' finally won Zappa a 'Best rock instrumental performance' Grammy in 1989. His political wit and high form of art, combined with satire, is clearly demonstrated throughout his entire career. Over and above the fact that he played 18 instruments, most of his stimulation came from the core of Stravinsky and his mentor Edgard Varése. His biting execution on lead guitar added a superior flair to the changing Sixties. In fact when it came to lead guitar Frank was confusingly underrated in all manner of speaking. His application of Hendrix-style guitar fused with abstract jazz, somehow slipped from view and remained absent from the guitar polls of the Melody Maker and the Rolling Stone magazine. With approx. 65 albums under his belt, and little or no hit singles, as with Grateful Dead, he would stimulate a bulk of axe men throughout the Seventies and Eighties. Adrian Belew, Steve Vai, and drummer Terry Bozzio would all cut their teeth in the most advanced training ground that any musician could ever hope for. Zappa has been sued so many times - in particular the song 'Jewish Princess', where he faced the legal anger of the B'nai B'rith Anti-Defamation League who filed a complaint with the FCC. At one stage in 1990 he served on the Czechoslovakian Trade and Tourism board as a cultural liaison to the west. This had everything to do with his friendship with long-time fan, President Václav Havel, who strongly forged the new democratic Czech Republic. The following year, Zappa considered running for the US presidency (God help us). Frank Zappa remains the ultimate individual to transgress the Sixties with his collective barrage of the brain police. His continual addiction to cigarettes and coffee, while totally abstaining from all type of drugs and alcohol, kept him sensitively focussed through the diverse Eighties. He died of prostate cancer on the evening of December 4 1993 in Los Angeles, aged 52. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music ROBIN AULD - 'LOVE KILLS' 1990 vinyl & 1995 German promo CD Some performers really give the listener a sense of their personalities and characters. Robin Auld does that. Through his music, I sense an energetic individual who also knows how to relax, a cheery spirit who likes the outdoors. I could be wrong, he could be a demon-tormented Rimbaud, but I doubt it. There are two Robin Auld releases titled 'Love Kills'. There's the ten-track vinyl South African release of 'Love Kills' (thanks, John!), and the German CD release with a slightly different twelve tracks. I'm listening to them both, but not at the same time, as I write. Both have the hits 'Love Kills' and 'Perfect Day' (a #1), but Johnny Clegg completists will want the 1990 vinyl version for his guitar on 'Charly Go Crazy'. Auld's voice and phrasing are his own, and both are warm, adding a comfortable tone to the songs. That's not to say he's mellow. This is electric guitar and drumming backbeat music with strong vocals. Sometimes gentle, sometimes fast dancing, Robin is a rock singer with folk rock tendancies and melodic skill. His songwriting is varied. He sings of love, optimism, heartbreak, girls, relationships, and modern life equally well. Sure, some songs are easygoing and poppy with melodies that make a home in your head. But no matter how easygoing Robin gets, he never becomes soporific. All of his songs have a certain "Auld bounce", some lilting leap in the melody or catch in the voice to lively them up. Auld's style is his own, not an easy thing in any field. But this rocker, folk rocker, melodist, family man, surfer, author, and ubiquitous et cetera, has a certain enjoyable touch with a song. 'Love Kills'? Maybe so, but satisfaction with Robin Auld's music brings me back, no matter which version I listen to. Robin Auld's website, www.robinauld.co.za, is entertaining, visually nice, and informative. Get on his mailing list if you like. He sends out chatty newsletters, as well as news of albums and tours. He seems like a real nice guy, a surfer with a zen attitude, don't you know? Robin Auld http://www.rock.co.za/files/robin_auld.html See Robin Auld at the River Club in Cape Town on Friday the 14th June. (See under 'Upcoming Gigs' below) Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music THE GENTS - THE GENTS The Gents consisted of Kevin Flame, Tim Rocker and Sydne B Good and their album features Jo Day on backing vocals. They produced one single ('School Kids') in 1980 and an eponymous album in 1982 which was produced by Chris Scott. Aside from this there is precious little information about this late 70's early 80's New Wave band from Durban. It's a shame really that so little notice was taken of them as their album shows that they had an ear for melody and an impressive ability with a guitar. The songs are measured rock with more than a hint of punk. Flame's soft, somewhat breathy vocals burn slowly throughout and keep a gentlemanly feel to the album. If you're looking for comparisons, think the Dolly Rockers first album or a toned down Asylum Kids. A reggae guitar brings a lilt to 'Don't ask Me' while 'Nobody Nobody' and 'Roxy Bar' have a wonderful rockabilly sound to them. 'You're So Young' is another standout track which will have you singing along with the catchy chorus in no time. The closing 'Passing Days' is a sad (synth) piano led tune that ends suddenly and leaves you wanting more. Despite the album being a controlled and well produced affair, judging by the pictures on the sleeve, The Gents look like they were a colourful, energetic and probably quite loud live act with a fair following. 'The Gents' is another in a rather long lists of overlooked SA albums which will probably never see the light of day again, but if you ever track it down in a second-hand record shop, my advice is quite simple buy it. Despite having grown up hearing 'White Bird' on the radio, I didn't know much about the band. This is also the first time I've heard the tracks 'Bombay Calling' and 'Don and Dewie'. As is commonly known, Purple (or Jon Lord specifically) lifted the music for 'Child In Time' from 'Bombay Calling'. To pay back IABD for lifting 'Bombay Calling', Purple "let" IABD lift the riff for 'Wring That Neck' for their 'Don and Dewie' song. Ok, so I've heard this legend for years and years, but had never heard the actual songs until today. OH MY GOD! It is so strange hearing what is essentially 'Child In Time' with violin and guitar, instead of keyboard and guitar. I mean it is EXACTLY the same riff and fills. I always assumed that Jon was merely inspired by this song, but he literally lifted the entire opening section to use in 'Child In Time'. I can't stress enough how this sounds exactly like 'Child In Time', so much so it's uncanny. So, I get to 'Don and Dewie' on the disc, and at first it's nothing like WTN. Then a few minutes into it, there's the violin playing the exact 'Wring That Neck' melody! A very cool song, it's almost what you'd expect Blackmore's Night to sound like doing 'Wring That Neck'. I don't know if I'll ever listen to 'Child In Time' the same way again though. Cool stuff, but in a sad kind of way. Great food and very friendly service was followed by superb entertainment from the Rockets who have been around seemingly forever (I remember seeing them in the 70s in Durban with Richard Jon Smith and Lionel Petersen). Wonderful renditions of classic songs like 'Unchained Melody', 'I Will Always Love You' (with incredible vocals by Lana Joy) and 'In The Still Of The Night' received a great response from the enthusiastic audience. Later in the evening they also played some medleys including a Santana tribute and a best of Reggae. After the interval the 3 Tjommies entertained us with Cape Flats humour and songs and had the crowd in stitches. After about 3 encores from the Rockets and the Tjommies we eventually let them go. Get down to On Broadway any Wednesday to Saturday for an evening of music, fun and laughter. Highly recommended. (BC) ------------------ HOUNDS OF THE BOO!SKERVILLE Not My Dog & Boo! at the Underworld in Camden (7 June 2002) After having heard 'one - nil to the En-gur-land' chanted almost the whole afternoon, it was refreshing to blasted by a solid dose of Not My Dog. Their brand of fiery full on rock caressed the eardrums with the sensitivity of Atilla the Hun while they bounced around on stage with canine abandon. This went down well with the crowd, especially those right in front of the stage who seemed to enjoy it very mosh. Boo! were bang on form (again). Half Man Half Cartoon Chris Chameleon gyrated his vocal chords and various other parts of his anatomy as Boo! delivered their normal slick drum 'n bass 'n everything else that Ampi Omo plays sound. With his "deer caught in the headlights" stare and startled meerkat watching a tennis match eyes, this chameleon and his munki punksters brought a visual and aural menagerie to the Underworld of Camden. Boo! http://rock.co.za/legends/90s/boo_index.html -------------- UPCOMING GIGS -------------- AULD AND NU FRIENDS IN CONCERT Friday 14 June - The River Club - 8.30pm - R30. Robin Auld's 'End Of National Tour' concert party at The River Club on Friday 14 June will be celebrating his 20 years in the music industry, and two exciting years of playing with drummer Peter Cohen (Bright Blue, Mango Groove) and bassist Nelson Barbosa as The Robin Auld Band. They will be sharing the spotlight with two of Cape Town's hottest new musical acts, Abavuki and StarkRavingSane. Robin Auld, who will be completing his first SA tour since 1994, has been a constantly evolving presence on the SA music scene since his early Z-Astaire days in the '80's. Songs like 'Zen Surfing In The Third World', 'All of Woman', 'Love Kills', and 'Heavy Water' are just a few of his many Top 20 hits (including two No 1's) and are still regularly heard on SA radio stations. Auld performs alternately in SA and the UK, with stints in Germany and New York where the surfer boy from Kommetjie played to packed houses at the famous C-Note. He has also been exploring other musical forms in his songwriting, such as mbaqanqa, Celtic and country blues. His songs, although still written with an ear for a pop tune, now reflect an increasing influence by such African artists as Philip Tabane and Salif Keita. Robin's commitment to encouraging local talent and combining musical influences resulted in the concert's diverse line-up. StarkRavingSane is a trio who creates their genre-defying music using just guitar, percussion and didgeridoo. They will be playing songs off their 2001 debut album, 'The Unknown', as well as tracks off their upcoming second album, due in the next few months. Abavuki was invited to perform after Robin Auld heard a lo-fi demo CD of the group, without even seeing their energetic dancing and interplay. Abavuki are 10 young musicians from Langa, who have been playing together for the past year. Not your average marimba band, they tightly weave traditional marimba sounds with percussion and brass, creating a unique blend of old and new. Their danceable rhythms combine African and Latin American influences. These serious musicians also find time to hold classes in Langa, passing on their skills and love of music to younger children. An exciting new act! Smoke Signals are presenting this Multi-Cultural Midwinter Event. With the assistance of sound engineering by 'Stage Gear', lighting by 'Stagefright' and dance music by DJ Alan Rule, this promises to be an exciting night of non-stop entertainment. It was Anneline who sang the words "...there are better days before us" in that song, before ending with '...paradise was almost closing down'. For Anneline, it is the latter line which is currently more starkly real. Photographer Fanie Jason and journalist Ray Joseph found Anneline in most distressing circumstances in Cape Town, seriously ill with full-blown HIV+/AIDS, having been raped a few years earlier in Johannesburg. Gallo Records have already come forward with a donation for Anneline, and it is hoped that you may be able to join us all in making life a little more bearable for one of our own. A special account has been arranged via Ray Joseph. Please contact Patric van Blerk or Ray Joseph for details.
