CDs - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ------------------------------------------------ 'ZOOM-ZOOM-ZOOM' SCORE PROUDLY PRODUCED IN SOUTH AFRICA The catchy piece of music used in the Mazda 'Zoom-Zoom' TV ad was produced for Mazda's USA advertising agency by South African music production company, Liquid Grooves. The best of South African talent was used in the choir, including names such as Bongani Masuku - the lead Zoom vocalist, T.K., Phinda Mtya of Lion King Fame, Innocent Madiba, Sipho Nxumalo, Judah, Kanyo Mapumulo and Sipho Mbele. Based in Johannesburg, Liquid Grooves is headed up by Barry Dean and Megan Shear. They have been in the business of composing and producing music for television and radio since 1995. Liquid Grooves was also responsible for the song 'Rise Again' - lyrics by Sifiso Sudan (featuring Neo and Innocent Madiba), which features on the Selection #4 of Student Life magazine's collectable monthly CD giveaway. The song was composed, arranged and produced by Barry Dean with his "wizarding" techniques. Editors Note: The piece of music being used to accompany the current 'Proudly South African' TV and radio commercials is 'Little Boy' by Abdullah Ibrahim. This PSA campaign was created by the CODe agency in Cape Town, and the music for the commercial was sourced by Sound Solutions. http://rock.co.za/soundsolutions -------------------- BILL KNIGHT - 'AFTER THE RINDERPEST' Fourth album from the famous False Bay folkie, previously known for his Smitswinkel Bay musical memoirs. 'After the Rinderpest' features 15 new Bill Knight "Kaapse-mengsel folk blues" songs, all recorded, engineered, and produced by Bill himself at his Cottage Studio. Tracks like 'Smitswinkel Calling', 'Pollsmoor Prison', and 'Kimberley Blue' show off Knight's warm and worn guitar and vocal style, and his affectionate and respectful focus on SA history and heritage. On 'After The Rinderpest', Bill is aided and abetted by a group of local, friendly musicians including Roger Lucey (vocals, sax, whistles), Seymour Howe (vocals), Terxia Chegwidden (vocals), Richard Tait (vocals), and James Kaye (percussion). Bill Knight will be launching his 'After The Rinderpest' CD at the Independent Armchair Theatre on August 31. See 'Concerts' section below for details. Listen to 2 MP3s off this new CD at http://www.samp3.com --------------- COMPILATIONS --------------- GET READY FOR 'C-WEED THREE' Three years after the release of the second 'C-Weed' compilation, Universal Music is gearing up to release 'C-Weed Three' and is on the lookout for KwaZulu-Natal's finest unsigned rock bands or artists, who have the talent, attitude and desire to go places. Released in 1997 and 1999 respectively, the two earlier compilations - 'C-Weed' and 'C-Weed version 2.0' - enjoyed phenomenal success, especially as far as exposure and publicity for South African music was concerned. Both projects took over a year to complete and served to not only create an awareness of local talent but also to propel the bands into the public eye. Over the years, the C-Weed story has received extensive media coverage both locally and abroad, and even featured prominently in international music magazine, BILLBOARD (5 April 1997), under the headline: "Durban Steals Spotlight in South Africa." Using the same winning formula, the 'C-Weed Three' compilation will again feature one original track from each of the bands or artists selected, and will also be released at a lower price, making it more accessible to South African music lovers. Durban's Richard Every has once again come up with an exciting sleeve design, while Tropical Sweat Studios with Dave Birch as engineer and co-producer, also looks set to be involved in the 'C-Weed Three' project. Bands or artists who think they have what it takes to be selected for the compilation must submit a demo tape or CD featuring three of their best original rock songs to Pedro at: Universal Music, Gallo House, 136 Cowey Road, Berea 4001, KwaZulu-Natal. The closing date is Monday, 9 September 2002. "We're looking forward to receiving some great songs and, naturally, it would be to the artists' advantage if the tracks were radio-friendly," says Pedro. For more information, contact: Pedro Carlo Tel: (031) 309-2576/97, Fax: (031) 309-2602 Cell: 082 892 6176 mailto:pedro.carlo@umusic.com --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://rock.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4.CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER SNOWY WHITE (BIRD OF PARADISE) Part 3 of 3 Blues lovers will favour his eighties line-up The Blues Agency, which also featured ex-East of Eden Jeff Allen and Kuma Harada. After the debut 'Change My Life', the Blues Agency released their tour de force, 'Blues On Me', later to be known as 'Open For Business'. During the '90's blues revival, Calvin Russell revived the Snowy White-penned 'Crossroads', with drummer Leland Waddell and his brother, the bassist Gary. During the 'Highway To The Sun' sessions, ex-Thin Lizzy Gary Moore stepped in to assist him. Snowy's 'gold top' Les Paul then crossed with him into Serbia, backing ex-Rolling Stones Mick Taylor and later Chris Rea. To explore the hidden guitar riffs of Snowy White, check out 'Cat Flea Jump' with the Blues Agency; 'Love, Pain And Sorrow' with David Gilmour; 'Slabo Day' with Peter Green; and 'The Time Has Come', with two Dutch virtuosos, drummer Johan van Emmerloot and bassist Walter Latupeirissa. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music OFF THE EDGE - UNFINISHED BUSINESS (Independent, OTE2002) http://rock.co.za/offtheedge I've put this new CD by Off the Edge through some rigorous trials. It's been road tested on both Texas highways and back roads. I've even put it through the demanding Teen Test. In both arenas 'Unfinished Business' has proved worthy. Listen to Giselle Mynbhardt, Off the Edge's new singer. She has a deeper and stronger voice than the angels Peter has worked with, but she is just as lovely. I am curious to hear her powerful vocal treatment of 'Angel of St. Aidens', an ethereal cathedral of a song. Giselle's voice dominates some songs, as the instrument of her pipes is no doubt intended to do, but if you enjoy Peter's guitar as much as I do, don't take that to mean there aren't tons of his soaring electric notes throughout this silver disc. This CD contains some of the crispest, clearest, right on electric guitar playing I've heard. Peter plays so that his straight-forward instrumentals engage the attention. And don't forget long-time Off the Edge member Tony Groenewald's rock steady bass. His pulsing, chugging, throbbing bass is always in perfect time. Special songs? Oh gosh. The opening track, 'Riff Valley' (with a clever title), 'Unfinished Business', 'Still Want You Back', and every other song. But really, typical of Off the Edge CDs, this one flows smoothly, rocks, and makes time pass easily and pleasantly. Though Peter and company have worked on this CD for two years, if you look at the Off the Edge catalog (with various lead singers adding different vocal auras), the band ends up looking pretty prolific. Each CD has its own charms. While Peter has a distinctive style, he keeps his work full of musical variety, not succumbing to style without content. Good stuff. Like other Off the Edge CDs, 'Unfinished Business' is just right for cruising Texas. The songs match the road by being rocking, reflective, melancholy, and again rocking as they match my thoughts and moods, and the ups, downs, and curves of the road. If you don't believe me, come on over for a braai, some beer, and a demo cruise with Off the Edge on the deck inside and with the Texas highways outside. Buy Off The Edge CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=off the edge Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music CHINA - TONY COX This album has nothing to do with the country, but rather comes from the cockney rhyming slang for friend (China Plate - Mate), a phrase that South Africans have adopted, and usually preface with the words 'Howzit my'. Tony Cox has surrounded himself with some of his chinas who just happen to be some of the best guitarists and musicians in the business. Names like George Phiri, McCoy Mrubata, Mauritz Lotz, Ron (Bones) Brettell and Barry van Zyl abound in the credits which reads like a who's who of SA music. >From this mix of artists comes a colourful and vibrant tapestry of sound. Yes I know 'tapestry' is an oft used phrase in reviewing, but from the moment you see the CD cover (a collage of colourful photos, presumably taken during the recording sessions), you are immediately given the impression of a tapestry, and this continues through the music. The music is free flowing, gentle, earthy and evocative. It's a far reaching album, with influences from Malawi and Sierra Leone and features tabla (traditionally an Indian instrument), an Oud (a middle eastern lute like instrument played here by Greg Georgiades) and a Chinese flute. The styles also change throughout. 'Hummingbird' and 'Kwe-Kwe' both have a township feel to them while 'Just One Of Those Days' has some decidedly African Jazz sounds. 'Kaapse'amba' is also jazzy, but more in a western style. 'Southern Hymn' sounds like N'kosi Si'kelele's melancholic brother with it's gospel like qualities and wonderful orchestration. The album is not all instrumental, there are a number of tracks featuring some beautiful African vocals. The opening title track and 'Wintersong' features hushed vocals that rub up against the music like a cat rubs up against one's leg. 'Emzini Kababa' is a Zulu cyclical song which has the guitar imitating the mbira, and Noise Khanyile soaring vocals echo a rural African landscape. However for this rock journalist, it's 'Karoosin' that is my favourite. Not because of the punny title (although that did catch my eye before I even put the CD on), but because it is a wonderful piece of guitar driven blues. The song conjures up images of space and movement, colours, sights and sounds. It a perfect track for... well 'Karoosin' really. With 'China' Tony Cox and his mates have produced an album of true beauty. File under world music, no, under blues... no, jazz... hang on maybe that should be traditional African. Oh sod it, stick it up at the counter as a featured album for all to see. It deserves it. Except for the number 4 and 5 spots changing places, the top five remained unchanged in 1972, while in 1982 the entire top 5 was static. In 1976 Boney M had spent 19 weeks on the chart and reached number 2 with 'Daddy Cool'. This successful debut was followed up in 1977 when 'Ma Baker' entered the top 5. South Africa had been slightly quicker than the UK in catching on to Boney M as 'Daddy Cool' had entered the SA charts almost a month before it entered the UK charts. FAR BETTER! Kristen Broberg Stellenbosch has quite a reputation for being home to many a student alcoholic, which is why I was confused when I walked into Life, the venue for State Far Better's first solo gig on Thursday 25th July. There was no one at the bar! Everyone was going off in front of the stage, far too taken by the music to care about their unusually empty glasses. When the band opened with 'Everytime', I noticed that the majority of the people were singing along . 'Everytime', it turns out, is currently number three on the charts at MFm, Stellenbosch's student radio station. This station's support evidently paid off as the crowd's response throughout the evening was unrelenting. The only time it wavered slightly was during the acoustic number, 'When', which didn't quite display the confidence evident in the rest of the songs. The band's forte (live at least) is undoubtedly up-tempo rock songs. They make good use of their respective musical backgrounds, capitalising on solid harmonising to give the polished effect that radio listeners are looking for. And radio listeners there were aplenty, which is why I commend the band for their wise choice of venue. It served its purpose almost perfectly having enough of the smart/casual atmosphere to suit the predominantly mainstream-rock crowd. It could, however, have done with fewer couches and plants scattered around the room, as it was, after all a rock gig. Once the planned set was complete the crowd was begging for more and so the band kicked into their renditions of some SA classics. SFB's take on 'Mannetjies Roux' was particularly (and unsurprisingly) appreciated, as was Johnny Clegg's 'The Great Heart'. Their other SA cover (the band performed all three for the RPM emerging sounds competition) was Saron Gas, sorry, Seether's 'Fine Again'. These songs held an understandable appeal, but what pleased me more than surprised me was the positive response they received once they finished the covers and reverted back to originals. Their sound is familiar, yet distinct and their (mainly love song) repertoire is peppered with an air of regret. The talents of these five gentleman (well, they are all accountants or headed in that direction) blend supremely and produce something that is not only likeable but also marketable. The crowd loved it, and what was expected to be an event for friends and hard-core fans turned into one of the most promising displays of local music enthusiasm since early SNG days. When front man Sebastiaan Bock responded to the audience's incessant cheers with "Thank you guys, I don't know what to say", something tells me he was being honest and by the way the amps were shaking and the ground threatening to cave in from jumping and applause, it seems his gratitude was well-received. Once all was sang and done the bar started filling up again and the mood for a good night out had been set. The band's official T-shirts claim that State Far Better are "Protectors of South African Virginity": I'd say that they're protectors of a lot more things South African, damn fine rock music being just one. The programme content has a strong South African acoustic element that highlights this country's abundant talent and promises to enthral! The Venue - The beauty of The Oribi Gorge was formed over millions of years as the Mzimkulwana River flowed over the flat land surface and picked out fractures in the rock, gradually eroding them away and cutting deep into the earth's crust. The Gorge is surrounded by semi-deciduous forests, criss-crossed with antelope paths and is home to hundreds of species of birds, plants and wildlife. To choose these surrounds, alongside the 170m Lehrs waterfall that tumbles into the gorge below, as the platform on which to host a festival of beautiful music seems obvious! Programme Highlights: Wendy Oldfield, Aquarian Quartet, Ray Phiri and Roger Lucey, Landscape Prayers, Steve Fataar and Ken E Henson, Guy Buttery, Vusi Ximba, Larry Amos, Syd Kitchen and Madala Kunene, Steve Newman and Tony Cox, Allison Road, with dance from Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company A full children's program and baby sitting service will keep the little ones occupied - stunning food stalls, an esoteric market and an art exhibition will be hosted at the Oribi Gorge Hotel. Camping sites are available at "The Overhanging Rock" - the most spectacular views of the Gorge and surrounds. "Wild Activities" for the more adventurous spirits will include taking the plunge alongside the Lehrs falls and experiencing a 110 metre abseil of a lifetime or the "more" daring individuals can simply step off the Lehrs Falls into the gorge and enjoy the highest "gorge swing" in the world!
