Less than a year after the release of their debut album, 'Legendary Beauty', the members of South Africa's youngest serious Goth band, have decided to go their separate ways, citing work pressure, new family responsibilities, and personal reasons for their surprise decision. Jurie and André, Silex's founder members and main songwriters, decided to call it a day, soon after the resignation of another founder member, Wayne. In an Intervention Arts release, the label added that "the band's album will be available for a limited time in good CD stores all over South Africa, but true winners are those who were privileged enough to ever catch Silex live. We wish them well in their future lives and look forward to ex-members of the band performing in new, differently oriented projects". The label is looking to go the same route as 'Hectic' in terms of the style of music featured on the collection. There will be a mix of current Top 40 tracks and some older party hits, mixing commercial pop, rock & dance. The aim is to release another smash party compilation of songs that featured often in the BBII household, including tracks from The Calling, Nickleback, Rodriguez, and the series' theme song as sung by the two Pop Idol finalists, Melanie Lowe and Ezra Lingeveld as well as Heinz Winckler's 'Once In A Lifetime' (but no 'Eyeshadow'!!??). That's the BBII compilation - smoother, dancier, and poppier! The Ilse-Marie of albums! The full tracklisting is: Mel & Ezra - 'Cabin Fever Big Brother Theme' (Break Mix), Westlife - 'Bop Bop Baby' (Almighty Remix), Pink - 'Don't Let Me Get Me', Right Said Fred - 'Stand Up (For The Champions)', Natalie Imbruglia - 'Wrong Impression', Robin S - 'Show Me Love' (Tonkas 2002 Edit), LFO - 'Every Other Time', The Beginnerz - 'Reckless Girl', Rodriguez - 'Sugarman' (Remix), Nickelback - 'How U Remind Me', The Calling - 'Adrienne', 2RW - 'Sexy Girl' (Radio Edit), Ricki & Daz - 'Rhinestone Cowboy', Mary Griffin - 'Knock On Wood' (Love To Infinity Remix), Gadjo - 'Besame Mucho' (Casino Edit), ABS - 'What You Got', Nianell - 'Have Faith', Heinz Winckler - 'Once In A Lifetime', Bosson - 'I Believe' (Up-Tempo Version), B3 - 'I.O.I.O', Semisane - 'Girlfriend (Of Mine)'. To be released in mid-October. -------------- ANDREW JANISCH - 'MOVED TO CHANGE' Someone once described fishing as "Transcendental Meditation with a punchline". They could have been talking about 'Moved To Change', Andrew Janisch's debut solo album, whose 12 songs seem to lull one into a state of dreamy bliss, while continuing to pose those contemporary, existential questions that affect many of us in this new, strange age. These are all sensitive and emotional songs, with minimal instrumentation save for Janisch's lustrous guitar and pleasingly raspy voice, and some laid back fretless bass from Nelson Barbosa. Janisch is best known for the two strong albums he made with Woodshed before deciding to tackle his solo album, and all these songs were written and assembled by him gradually over a period of months at Paris Studios. From the wide-eyed future shock of the opener 'Millennium Boy' ("Here it is, here I am, just another, Millennium Boy"), to the closing optimism of 'Fly Away', 'Moved To Change' constantly maintains its soft melodic and wordy punch. Favourites include the zippy first single 'Certify', 'Change Your Ways', 'Ride On', 'Smile', and specially 'Whole Again', the mid-album drum 'n bass pop song highlight. But this is mostly Janisch's musical voyage of personal discovery as explained in 'Millennium Boy', where his vulnerable tone echoes a similar theme to that of Talking Heads' 'Once In A Lifetime' by pondering: "Buy a new house, car, wife, get deeper into debt, get stuck inside your life; don't you want to hold your heart just for once?" 'Moved To Change' is a thoughtful, relevant and beautiful album! Mickie (real name: Michael Hayes) formed his first band at the age of seventeen and called it Mickie Hayes & the Most and travelled to South Africa in 1958 with his sixteen year old girlfriend Christine. The Boere were rocking and many were caught by the sunshine, braaivleis and SA beauties, namely Al Casey (guitar teacher to Duane Eddy and close associate and exponent of songwriter Lee Hazlewood). American songwriter John D. Loudermilk - composer of 'Tobacco Road', 'Indian Reservation', 'This Little Bird' and 'Sunglasses' (which was a big hit for Hilary in 1968) - was keen to cash in on his song 'Blue Train'. The South Africans thought it was their own Choo-Choo but Loudermilk was singing about the heart break line in the USA. (Loudermilk's South African tour received strong female appreciation due to the rather good looking drummer, although John often thought that the ladies were in hunger for him). We had the Shadows performing in Cape Town and more pronounced a group known to be the first long haired combo to rock the conservative nationalists namely the A-Cads. The A-Cads were formed by a Liverpool musician called Peter Rimmer. They comprised of a couple of G-Men, a Squire, a Londoner, a Scot and an ex-Tempest backer. The name A-Cads came from an abbreviation of Academy (of Music). Peter had formerly backed stars such as Marty Wilde and the Tempests. Hank Squires had cut his teeth with Johnny Kongos' G-Men. The G-Men were in disarray due to Johnny heading for English soil. Continued next week... 'Ethnic/Shmethnic' flows through still pools and over jumping rapids, carrying one along nicely. This album is a balanced mix of vigorous folk and melancholy ballad, all delivered in tight harmony. Folks who don't care for folk music don't think of it as high-energy, but three guitars and two rollicking voices can generate energy as well as they produce emotion. The singing on 'Ethnic/Shmethnic' is mostly strong male voice duets, but Julian Laxton fans will want to hear him play, and, on one track, sing! My favorite songs are those with the active guitars, the "Wild Geese" sort of uptempo numbers, but the mournful and tragic numbers are, like the blues, songs about feeling bad that make one feel good to hear. Here's a quick tour through the album's various tempos and lovely melodies that take one's feelings from soaring to melancholy. Take a deep breath and begin. 'Katy Kline', uptempo and jumping; 'The Water is Wide', slow and thoughtful, 'Little Beggar Man', uptempo and lively; 'Ox Driver's Song', soaring and free, manly; 'Ramble Away', slow, a rambling rogue falls in love with pretty Nancy; 'Gypsy Rover', happy-go-lucky, luvverly, nice whistling; 'Mary Anne', I'm leaving on a ship, fare-thee-well; 'Irish Rover', delightful nonsense, rich, rioting, and rollicking; 'Sinner Man', "Where you gonna run to all along that day?", 'Van Diemans Land', don't get caught poaching, ye slowly rambling boys of Liverpool; 'Hangman', a really old favorite; 'Let Me Fly', spiritual folk; 'Banks of the Ohio', a mournful murder tragedy. 'Hangman', Just as many American kids learned of the blues from the British Invasion bands, I learned of this ancient folk song from Led Zeppelin. Folk or rock it's a favorite. The CD liner notes provide a concise history of folk in the Fifties and Sixties up to Dylan plugging in - all in a handful of paragraphs! If you're a long time Mel, Mel and Julian fan, you will be excited (and I don't use the word lightly) to hear that two live CDs are in the pipeline, and two studio CDs are being remastered. I'm not a long time fan, but a new fan of the work of Mel, Mel, and Julian. JLH (So shocked he almost falls out his rocking chair): White boys!! No way man. They play like true bluesmen and dat singer man, dat is the voice of a black bluesman, no way is he white. WD: Ah seen dat singer. He's a white boy, got a great big afro hairstyle, bright red it is. JLH: What can possibly be afro about a white boy? WD: Well dey come from Africa. JLH: Ah thought you said dey was from the deep south. WD: Yeah, dey're from the deep south of Africa. JLH: Well ah never. Hey dey're playing one of mine now, I recognise dat 'I am in the Mood'. Dem Africans are lucky to have such blues right on their doorstep. Man dey got it together, dat guitar's right on, and dat piano sound, man I never thought a piano could sound so good playing the blues. Sounds like dey are playing live. Tell me where's dey playing? WD: Says here dat it was in the Kleinlibertas Teater in Stellenbosch. JLH: What's a Tea Ter? WD: Dunno, guess it's a theatre as de picture looks a bit like a movie house. JLH: Lemme see. Jessica Jones was enjoying her 12th week in the top 5 and Alan Garrity his 9th. Dr Hook had now had a run of 6 weeks at the top. Brotherhood of Man where accused of stealing from Abba's 'Fernando' when they released 'Angelo'. The tunes where fairly similar, but as was expected, the Brotherhood denied any plagiarism. Peter McCann's 'Do You Wanna Make Love' obviously meant something different to what you might think as it wasn't banned. In fact this was it's second week at the top. Imagine how Survivor must have felt when their anthemic rock theme from a movie about a great boxer was replaced at the top by some Germans singing monotonous lyrics in dulcet tones, accompanied by one of those annoying Casiotones. They couldn't even come up with an original name for a band of 3. 'Da Da Da' still remains a great pop tune to this day. And Talking of repeating words starting with "D", Duran Duran made their top 5 debut with 'Hungy Like the Wolf'. Los Lobos' 1987 hit 'La Bamba' was from a movie of the same name that starred Lou Diamond Phillips and charted the tragic life of Richie Valens. John Farnham's 'You're the Voice' popped back into the top 5 after a weeks absence. (Weekly Audio Visual Experiment) Tuesday 8 - Cigars, Whiskey and Jazz! Featuring Chiaro Schuro This is an evening for those with an appreciation for the finer qualities in life. Entrance will be discounted for those who arrive with a suit jacket and cigars, whiskey and good music will be the heart of the event. ChiaroScuro consists of a dynamic group of composers who strive to perform a dynamic style of music, incorporating styles such as African, Folk, Blues, Rock and of course Jazz. Song writer's Langa Khanyile, whose musical background is Jazz and African music and Chris Haw, who has played and written mainly folk and alternative rock, pull these uncanny genres into most of their songs. The name ChiaroScuro means in fact the contrast between dark and light and this band certainly aims to make that contrast clear. Coupled with this fresh and different style of music, the live performance is a feast of interaction between singers and confident stage presence. The evening is sure to be enjoyable for those with any taste in music. Lucey has also just completed his new album, 'Gypsy Soul', which he made with percussionist Dan Chiorboli and Brendan Jury on viola. 'Gypsy Soul' is Lucey's first album proper since 'Half Alive' in 1982. The release of 'Gypsy Soul' begins a year-long project between Lucey, Chiorboli, Jury, and the Modena City Ramblers, which will result in a collaborative album called 'Songs Of The Revolution'. The album will be promoted on a World Tour in 2003, taking in countries like Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Romania, Spain, and finally Italy.
