On it are tracks compiled from three of Cox's albums - his 1996 album 'Cool Friction', the award-winning 'Matabele Ants' and his latest release, 'China'. Cox has just returned from a month-long tour of the U.K. where he performed several concerts and a number of workshops that culminated in the Lewes International Guitar Festival and a double-bill appearance with popular Irish guitarist Eric Roche. Cox's guitar playing attracted a U.K. manager and he is set to go back next year for a three-month tour of major guitar and arts festivals also incorporating France and Scandinavia. Zimbabwean born Tony Cox is renowned throughout South and Southern Africa for his inventive and locally flavoured genius on the acoustic guitar. Cox demonstrates a complete mastery of the 'finger-style' of playing, where the right hand works with precision to weave a tapestry of textures. Here's a taster. http://www.samp3.com ----- CDs ----- THE HELICOPTERS - 'THE BEST OF' (RETROFRESH) "Mysteries and jealousy, mysteries and jealousy, In my miiiiind". Remember that? You do now. One of the hookiest choruses ever to grace a South African pop single. This one came from The Helicopters, the "Flock Of Durans" of V-Town (Vereeninging), who dazzled the SA pop scene through the '80's with their local brand of New Romantic style and music. So here, for the first time on CD, is the best of The Helicopters, the latest release by Benjy Mudie on his RetroFresh label. The Helicopters, who formed around 1981, were always fronted by Bernard Binns (lead vocals, guitar). But with an ever-revolving line-up that included names like Bert Askes, John Mason, Andre van den Heever, Piet Koen, Franco de Nuzzo, Nick Matzukis, Macjek Scheibel, Paul Hughes, Martin Ledger, Alistair Broadhead, and Carole Walsh, they should rather have been called "The Revolving Doors". The Helicopter's first single, 'Flying High', and 'Miles And Miles Apart' from 1984, are the only two tracks not included on this 14-song collection. But there are live versions of 'Watch Out' and 'Don't Wanna Live In Hollywood' among the other Helicopter favourites off the band's two albums, 'Love Attack' in 1985, and 'In The Flesh' two years later. There are also short but worthy sleeve notes by one of the band's earliest fans, Andrew Rees. Full tracklisting: 'Television Part 1', 'Mysteries And Jealousy', Love Breaks Down', 'Watch Out' (Live), 'Kissing For Pleasure', All Your Dreams', 'Terror In The Attic', 'Western Skies', 'Only For You', 'Whisper Your Secret', 'Don't Vanish, It's A Love Attack', 'Yesterday Was Never', 'Come & Dance', 'Don't Wanna Live In Hollywood' (Live). One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Selling South African Music to the World! -------- BOOKS -------- 'DISCARDS' BY PATRICK LEE (PENGUIN) Patrick Lee is regarded as one of South Africa's finest (music) journalists, and is now living and working in England. His first novel focuses on a disparate group of new South Africans (hence the title) living their lives in the coastal town of Port Victoria (think Port St Johns). There's the ex-pat returning to her childhood home, the new chief magistrate of the district who is investigating a murder in the town, the typical local drinking gang at the bar, and someone called "Bob Peace" who is the late-night DJ at the local radio station, "Radio Freedom" (figure it out!). Review to follow. 'Uncomplicated Dreams' fit right in without missing a beat. Not that Ella Mental imitate anyone, but they come on down and work in one of rock's many ages. I thought the lyrics a tad repetitive, until I discovered that was me singing along. These are positive lyrics, too. No discouraging words here. One favorite, the driving 'Monsters', sounds like it should be gloomy, but instead sings, "Now I've conquered all my monsters". Throughout, Heather's voice sounds slightly detached in modern ironic fashion, yet is almost sunny, without sacrificing honesty. What you get with this CD, aside from the usual Retro Fresh detailed band history and the usual sharply remastered tracks, is the original album and six bonus tracks. Two bonus tracks are live, one of which is from the "Concert in the Park" in 1985. You get all rock: Heather Mac, vocals, Tim Parr, guitar, Adrian Levi, bass, and Herman Eugster, drums. Don't be alarmed when you buy this 13-song CD and come up with 12 tracks. 'Small Towns' flows into 'Point of View' on track 8, instead of 8 and 9 as listed. You get full value here. Oftentimes, CD bonus tracks are pleasant but no great addition to the original album. Not so in this case. These five bonus tracks add to the overall quality. 'Small Towns' tells of a small town in SA... or is it in the USA? 'Point of View' is social commentary. The live 'Once Awake' rocks hard, and the live '(See Yourself) Clowns' snaps from a brief meandering intro into dynamic singing and fierce guitar, giving quite a thrill. Another classic telling more about a new direction. Let the music tell you more, thanks to Ella Mental. The 'Greek Chick' in question was Jenny Delenta and on her debut solo album simply entitled 'Delenta' there are no trills in the voice. The album is produced by Jenny's boyfriend Craigie Dodds who was the driving force behind Egyptian Nursery and has recently been working on the production side for the successful UK group the Sugababes. Dodds also wrote, or co-wrote almost all the songs. The album is almost as much a Craigie Dodds album as it is a Delenta one, although there is certainly a synergy between the two that make this album work as well as it does. I would describe the music as laid back dance. You could play this at a club and have the patrons on the floor bopping away, use it as a background for a dinner party, or just put it on to help wind down after a day in the office. Jenny's voice has a soothing quality to it. Although she does not show off the full versatility of her voice, it is always suited to the music, caressing the instrumentation with a lovers intimacy. The pacier tracks like the opener 'Fall' and 'It's OK' nestle gently up against some of the quieter songs. 'Higher Ground' (reached number 1 on the SA Rock Digest singles charts) is a beautiful track that features an anthemic chorus (in a relaxed sort of anthem kind of way). But is it the song dedicated to Jenny's mother and father that is the centrepiece of the album. With it's Eastern rhythms and achingly heartfelt lyrics this is a song that can make you cry due to it's sheer beauty. The track features lyrics and vocals by Rosanna Delenta, Jenny's sister that are in Greek and, although not delivered in the vocal style of a Bollywood Diva, there is a similar Eastern feel to them. It is a touching and emotional song. This is an accomplished and polished album. It is personal and universal, dance music and it's slickest and sophisticated, laid back best. Being South African I can speak English and Afrikaans. I also know a little Greek. Her name is Jenny Delenta, and she has produced and album that the Irish would describe as trilling. If you see it, do it for the cause and support it! ------------ GIG REPORT ------------ ALL AGES SHOW Boogaloos, CT, Sat 26 Oct There are not very many venues in Cape Town that hold all-ages shows so, when one is held, it's usually very well attended and Saturday night at Boogaloos was no exception. Hundreds of kids invaded the Skate Park and turned it into one big phat pit. I arrived a bit late and so missed Impropriety, the first band that played. According to the guys that saw them, they rocked and provided some very professional punk for a new band. I did catch 22 Stars, the second act of the night. They played a really cool set and the kids created quite a raging skank pit. The only disappointing thing about them is that their vocalist has a very American accent even though he comes from a pure Afrikaans family. Then Neshama plugged in and thrashed out some hectic tunes to the joy of all the Northern Suburbs hardcore kids. The mosh pit became very wild and frenetic, with guys about 9-10 years old moshing their hearts out. At one point everybody stopped and ran away when some little anarchist let off a stink bomb in the pit, but the crowd couldn't stay away for too long and returned for the next song. Then the guys from New World Inside arrived to sweet talk the crowd with some brilliant emo/punk tunes. Unfortunately the sound was not too good for them, and their amps kept cutting out (and Rafie broke 2 strings). But despite all the technical difficulties, NWI played a brilliant set. Then, while Not Guilty was getting ready to play, everybody's attention was distracted because somebody had puked on the floor and this guy was sticking his tongue in it so that he could have his photo taken and put in Blunt {That's Blunt magazine, and thanks for sharing that little anecdote with us! - Ed.}. But then Not Guilty started up and everybody reverted back to some serious moshing to one of the best hardcore bands in Cape Town. These guys rip it up and play with incredible emotion. The concert was over before 11 and everyone went home very happy, and somewhat bruised. (DN) ----------- GIG GUIDE ----------- GAUTENG - Fri 8 Nov - Northgate ice-rink (R30, 19h00). GORDON HASKELL Part 3 of 3 He jammed with Hendrix, played for King Crimson, and wrote 'Lazy Life', one of South Africa's finest singles. Haskell's entree into King Crimson was largely due to an old school friendship with Robert Fripp and his acute jamming with the League of Gentlemen. He replaced Greg Lake as singer and bassist on two of King Crimson's finest albums, the anguished 'Wake of the Poseidon' and the jazz-drifting 'Lizard', with vocal assistance by Yes man Jon Anderson. Haskell's song writing abilities were undoubtedly overlooked in the helter and skelter of the supergroup era, but 30 years later, Gordon climbed back into the charts with an album entitled 'Shadows On The Wall'. A worthwhile search for collectors is to find the Haskell-penned song 'Lazy Life', which probably found its way to Billy Forrest via Sharon Tandy. 'Lazy Life' was released by Quentin E Klopjaeger (aka Billy Forrest) in South Africa in 1968 and went to No. 1 on the SA charts. They were supplemented by Zimbabwean John Edmond at number 9, Denise Freeman at 10 and Billy Forrest and Sharon Tandy at 15. Despite this, Johnny Nash was still at number 1 (4 weeks and counting). Joe Dolan's 5th top 20 hit (and 4th top 5 hit) moved up to number 3. SA interest was Reg de Beer who clung to a top 5 position. It was second week at the top for the Brotherhood of Man. Kenny Roger's 'Lucille' had entered the top 5 before any of the other top 5 singles had even entered the top 20. It was his 14th week in the top 5. The top 5 in 1982 was comprised of the same 5 songs that it had been for the past 4 weeks. Not suprisingly 4 out of the 5 were included in the top 20 hits of 1982. 'Hungry Like The Wolf' was the one that didn't make it while 'Eye Of The Tiger' was number 2 for the year behind Dr Hook's 'Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk'. Pop music has never been the same since the onslaught of hits from what became known as The Hit Factory. The powerhouse production trio of Stock, Aitken and Waterman were resposible for numerous hits in the late 80's and brought to prominence acts like Kylie Minogue, Samantha Fox and Rick Astley, the latter of which entered the top 5 this week in 1987. They are all available at One World and will make great Christmas gifts. DISCO FEVER (Gallo, 1999) Nearly two and a half hours of South Africa's finest disco moments can be found on this double CD offering compiled by Derek Smith with help from Brian Currin. It's jam packed with classics from Buffalo, Hot R.S., John Ireland as well as 2 ex-Rabbitt's endeavours. Neil Cloud features with 'Reflections' and 'Time of the Season' while Disco Rock Machine, which included production and guitar work from Trevor Rabin, also appear. Two of their tracks ('Time to Love' and 'Loving Styles') were penned by Rabin. South African artists were good at taking classic rock tunes, disco-fying them, but still retained a rock feel to the songs. Hot R.S's 'In-a-gadda-da-vida' and Buffalo's 'Born to be Wild Medley' are good examples, and you can also get the full 17 minutes 32 seconds of Rouge's 'Eloise Concerto' which was built around the Barry Ryan classic track 'Eloise'. So, set the mirrorball revolving, dig out the white suite and get down to the these classic floorfillers. ELVIS PRESLEY'S SOUTH AFRICAN DISCOGRAPHY With all the hype and interest around the new Elvis Number 1 hits collection, Tertius Louw set up a webpage for Elvis' South African releases including info on one of the world's rarest vinyls, 'Janis & Elvis' from 1958. Janis Martin wrote: "When I left RCA, supposedly I owed them $3 300. Back then when you signed the contract they paid for your sessions and expenses. But when the royalties started comin' in, they took everything off the top. I wasn't even aware that this Janis and Elvis record even existed until I was contacted by Edward Bayes from Millersville, Maryland. He had looked me up and invited me to his house to be on the Larry Angelo show, a local show in Baltimore. That was the first time I had seen the disc. I started makin' inquiries and the way I understand it, they released this disc in South Africa to try to recoup the money. It was released on a Friday and by Saturday afternoon, Colonel Tom [Parker] had somehow gotten word and called RCA and made 'em pull it. Because #1: NOBODY performs with Elvis. #2, it was called "Janis and Elvis" and not "Elvis and Janis". I met a man in Hamburg, Germany who paid $2700 for a mint copy. It's so rare because it was only on the market Friday and maybe half a day on Saturday (in South Africa only). That's the only ones that exist. RCA has re-released it legitimately in France a few years ago. It was bootlegged here in the States". They were a ska/reggae-type outfit, resembling UB40, and played live around the Cape Peninsula during the late-80's". Recently we received this comprehensive reply from Kevin, thanks! Dunno if you were ever able to help Ian R with his query from a while ago about Smoking Brass. I used to hang with them for a couple of years, so I can offer a little bit of info. They were formed in 1984 by Dave Bongers, a multi-instrumentalist who had previously had a band called Back To Normal. Yeah, they resembled UB40 a bit, and developed a slightly ska feel later on. The line-up was Bongers (vocals, tenor sax, drums, percussion), Dave Cave (guitar), Neil Cave (bass), Craig Angilly (drums), Ian Florrence (trombone) and Louis Raubenheimer (alto sax). They started off humbly with gigs at city dive The Mix, then moved on to Battle of the Bands type gigs, afternoon concerts at the Brass Bell, private gigs, and so on. Their sound initially was smoky, deep reggae with a fat brass punch, sometimes quite dubby if soundman Steve Gordon got it right (he usually didn't). The band practised religiously, with Bongers composing and arranging all songs. Bongers' energy, resources and enthusiasm sustained the band - most of the others were students for whom being in a band was a part-time thing. Ian Florrence then became very taken with ska (Fine Young Cannibals hit with that "Johnny" song), and he pushed for the band to move in that direction. It was probably a good thing, because the on-stage energy of the band was often compromised by their prodigious consumption of the green stuff. Gigs are a hazy, stoned memory - bottlenecks, man. Louis Raubenheimer left the band at the end of 1985, and they continued without him. I left town in early 1986, so lost touch with the band, but the last few times I saw them they were tighter and snappier and less brassy. Only Craig Angilly is still actively playing. He's popped up in the trance scene, and drummed in many ethnic/rhythm/electro bands over the years. I still see Dave Bongers occasionally (at trance parties!), but I don't think he's involved in music at all - this is a real pity, because he is a flamboyant, powerful drummer and an excellent all-round musician. I think Dave Cave is a marine fitter, dunno what his brother is up to. Ian Florrence rigs soundsystems for clubs, and is quite successful, I think. Louis Raubenheimer emigrated to The Netherlands when he left the band; he hooked up with The Genuines in Amsterdam, and guested and recorded with them in the few years they were in Europe; when he returned to South Africa he joined the reconstituted Dynamics (Jimmy Florrence is Ian's brother) for a while, but I think that project fizzled out. And that's what I can offer on Smoking Brass. Regards Kevin Cape Town --------------------- QUICK AND THE CHROME Some time ago I heard a song on radio (I think it was 94.7) titled 'Walking Beside Me' I think that the anouncer metioned that Quick and the Chrome were an offshoot of an ex-member of Ballyhoo named Ralph Martin. I felt it was one of the best local numbers I had ever heard and have not seen or heard niether hide or hair of it since. I have not been able to find any reference to it, or the members, or the band on any search engine, record shop or South African music site to the point that I think that it was just my imagination and that no such song ever existed.
