The company produces a range of T-shirts that parody well known SA brands and logos, and is about to have a Cape Town High Court run-in with South African Breweries on February 20. One of the disputed T-shirts has the red and black Black Label beer logo with the product's name changed to "Black Labour". Laugh It Off has already had a smaller similar legal tiff with Standard Bank (with a "W"), Lego ("Legover"), and Red Bull ("Dead Bull Gives You Mince"). But now this is premier league law stuff, with Nurse looking to the Freedom Of Speech clause in the Constitution to justify his using of parody as "social commentary". He will also be helped by Waddy Jones (ex-Max Normal, currently Constructus) who composed the song 'Black Labour' as a complimentary theme tune for the case, and the pre-trial "Pep Rally" to be held at The Mercury on Wednesday. Justin Nurse also wrote his own set of lyrics and, together with David Kramer who wrote the music, produced the track 'More Reward'. To be heard on radio stations soon. Hope Justin gets Justice! Laugh It Off "Pep Rally" at The Mercury, Wednesday 19 - R30 (entrance, CD and mag). Details at www.laughitoff.co.za ---------------------- ROBIN AULD RETURNS WITH SELF-PRODUCED AND INDEPENDENT 'LUXURY' Perennial Cape Town singer and musician Robin Auld returns to the local music scene with his first commercial album in over 10 years. The album, titled 'Luxury', also marks a new chapter in Auld's music career as this is his first go-it-alone CD, completely financed and produced by Auld and recorded at the artist's own recording studio in the idyllic seaside town of Kommetjie. "The title, 'Luxury', is a comment on the freedom one has when making a record without corporate influence," says 42-year old Auld of the album which was produced under his own Free Lunch label and is distributed by independent music distributor Bowline. "Another luxury was putting the whole thing together in Kommetjie which meant the engineer and I were doing surf checks on the way to the studio.... not always a good idea it has to be said." 'Luxury's' 11 tracks feature a wide variety of accessible music styles. While the acoustic textures of Auld's previous albums have been retained, 'Luxury' confidently ventures into the areas of rock, pop and reggae, anchored by some true-blooded South African guitar work. Among the tracks identified as singles are 'Bobby Come Back', the pick-me-up 'Slip Away', and a rock track called 'Kiss It Off'. Lyric themes address such issues as the digital revolution in the music industry and the way it has brought control back to the artist ('The Colonel and Me'); advice to young artists from those who have been-there, done-that ('Kiss it Off'), and the romance of the human heart ('You Came Back to Me'). The album features the established rhythm section of Peter Cohen and Nelson Barbosa, as well as various Cape Town musicians. Engineered by David Langemann, initial tracks were recorded at Dave Birch's tropical sweat studio in Durban with further mixing and tracking done at Auld's outfit in Kommetjie. 'Luxury', was released last week at the Up-the-Creek Music Festival, and will be backed by various solo live dates on the Garden Route in March and April, with a full band tour planned later in the year. ---------------------------- TASSENBERG WINGERDSTOK LIFESTYLE FESTIVAL - WIN FREE TICKETS! 28 Feb - 2 March 2003 - Theewaters Sports Club The weekend of 28 February-2 March 2003 marks the return of the legendary Wingerdstok Festival. The Soundflowers are a new Cape band featuring Craig Beneke (vocals), Wayne Pauli (guitar) and Carl Train (drums). The three met while working on Beneke's solo album, 'Blue Sky'. The Soundflowers' sound incorporates both Beneke's and and Pauli's distinctive individual songwriting styles and is influenced by the new wave of British bands like Coldplay and Travis, and the music the three grew up with (U2, The Police, The Stones). They arranged, recorded and mixed their debut EP/demo at the Sunset Recording Studios with Jurgen Von Wechmar. Their first album will be released early in 2003. Catch the Soundflowers live at the Independent Armchair Theatre on Wednesday 19th. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.SAmp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ----------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ Some recent releases on SAmp3.com: 'Apart Inside' - Track4 Driving nu-metal song from Track4. Their press release says it best: "Track4 walk a fine line between hip-hop/rapcore topped with a grindstone of infectious melodies in a tinge of nu-school rock." This song can also be found on the Wicked Rock 2CD compilation 'Let Us Be Heard'. 'Broken Innocence' - Alexis Alexis hails from Port Elizabeth and is only 14 years old, but make no comparisons to other young female singers like Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne. Alexis sings in her own style and with a powerful maturity on 'Broken Innocence' and on her lastest album 'Overload' from which this track is taken. This is a slow-burning song that needs to be listened to all the way through. The notes Alexis hits after about 3 and half minutes will leave you breathless. 'Cowboy Ranger' - Citizen Jones Steve Miller meets the Crash Test Dummies. See CD review below... 'Crowd Invasion' - Bedrock Goodtime rock track from the brand new CD 'So Where's The Party?' from Namibia's Bedrock, the band in the sand. Fans of Judas Priest will love this song. 'Funk The World' - Roboto Da Funk Rupert Mellor and Tully McCully are Roboto Da Funk. Listen to it, or better still, dance to it. 'Open Your Eyes' - KGB A track off KGB's 'The First Born' CD. See "If nobody downloads your music for free" article below... 'Razorback' - Dorp A funky track combining acoustic guitar and electronica, taken from the chart-topping new album from UK-based Dorp. 'Stand By Me' - Tait This song is not a cover of the Ben E King (also John Lennon) standard, but is an original new song from Tait's debut album due for release very shortly. 'Toeka Sampler' - Steve Hofmeyr Sampler from Steve's lastest nostalgia trip. See CD review below... 'The Warrior Sampler' - Ipi 'NTombi feat. Margaret Singana One of the best selling CDs on One World, this album was originally recorded in 1973 and produced by Billy Forrest. This is sampler of highlights from the album that started Margaret Singana on her way to the top. 'Wish You Were Here' - Lila Not a cover of the Pink Floyd song from 1975, nor of the 1995 song by Rednex (which Ritchie Blackmore covered with Blackmore's Night), but actually a cover of the emotional song by November 5 from the album '617' released in 1999 and reviewed in last week's Digest by John Samson. The connection? Lila is Braam Ackerman (the man behind November 5)'s wife. Listen to all the mp3s listed above at the biggest South African mp3 website in the world at http://www.SAmp3.com ----- CDs ----- "IF NOBODY DOWNLOADS YOUR MUSIC FOR FREE..." While many record company executives view "free downloads" as an enemy to CD sales, Alexander Gregori of KGB's label Mothermix Records has a different view: "The album that got the most downloads ever in downloading history incidentally was the album that accounted for the biggest numbers in CD sales last year, and that was Eminem's 'The Eminem Show'!" Gregori added: "Contrary to what record companies try to make the public believe, free downloads actually boost CD sales and are one of the best free promotion tools available today. Or, as John Snyder, president of Artist House Records, a board member of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), and a 32-time Grammy nominee, put it: 'If nobody downloads your music for free, THEN you have a problem!'" Mothermix Records have made Cape Town's hip hop duo KGB's latest No 1 hit, 'Open Your Eyes', available as a free download on SAmp3.com, following the success of the 'Kwaito' single off the duo's debut album, 'The First Born'. 'Open Your Eyes' topped the MFM charts two weeks ago. KGB's debut album, 'The First Born', is still available from Cape Town taxi drivers, selected stores, and http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?id=cdmm001 for under R50. Download for free at http://www.SAmp3.com -------------------------- 'ROMANCE AND FINANCE' - CITIZEN JONES We've just met Joe Public, now meet Citizen Jones. This new Gauteng band/group/duo (?) is essentially the songwriting collaboration between Rich Jones and Chantal Gussenhoven, with the songs on their debut album, 'Romance And Finance', being performed by Rich Jones and a bunch of his mates from various other bands and walks of life. That illustrious "bunch of mates" include Mike Meiring (Highway Jam), Mark Belling (Mean Mister Mustard), Ekkie Ekhart (Currently playing with Highway Jam, Kwatcha and Vinnie and the Viscounts). Kai Horsthenke (Highway Jam), Brett Collings (Highway Jam), Tim Trotter (ex-Amersham), Ant Duke (Station manager of 5fm and founder member of The Usual Suspex), Quentin Zeelie (sadly passed away). Adam Lomas and Nathan Waywell (Starskii), Ackroyd Threngle, Wendy Oldfield, and Hilton Brooker (Mean Mister Mustard). Rich Jones played his first gig at the legendary Vic Hotel in Grahamstown at age 17 and has performed sporadically since then including at Splashy Fen and Woodstock 04. Has been in a number of semi-notorious bands in Johannesburg including The Wild Palms and The Stress Junkies, who were Roxy regulars as well as stints in Cockers and Mojos. Jones was also with the late Capital Radio for nearly ten years operating under the name of "The Doctor" or "Doctor Jones". He has worked on various other stations and currently resides as music programmer/presenter on Radio 2000. 'Romance And Finance' was produced by Neil Snyman, and features the songs: 'Cowboy Ranger', 'Trains', 'The Dark Heart', 'Jeremy Says', 'Tick Tock', 'Wake Up', 'Comes A Time', 'Lesson', 'Streets', and 'Georgina's Tune', which was written for Rich's mom who was from Scotland and is a Celtic-tinged celebration of her life. There are very few albums nowadays that get more than one play on my CD player, but Citizen Jones just refuses to budge. The rich (no pun intended) voice of Rich Jones reminds me in places of that guy from the Crash Test Dummies {Brad Roberts - ed.} and singer-songwriters like Shawn Phillips, Jim Croce, Warren Zevon and Steve Miller. The musicianship is superb throughout and really enhances the finely-crafted songs. The fast-paced 'Jeremy Says' gives a different perspective on life and powerful rocker 'Wake Up' tells it like it really is, pulling no punches. Let this album get stuck in your CD player. Martin Rocka and the Sick Shop ain't in your house. They're in your garden man, ripping out your lawn, chomping holes in the hosepipe, snorting wasps for kicks and surfing with whales when they're bored. If you've seen them live before - oooh bless your wicked inner child, my dear. If not - it's Martin Rocka on lead guitar. Covered with white-eyed balaclava, screaming jacket and very angry shoes. Then listen to him play. Remember to wipe the drool off your chin and klap yourself if your mouth won't close. Yes. It's normal to feel your lungs bulge through your eye sockets. Also cast an ear to the enigmatic Paulie Beers on drums. Picture pigeon-egg hailstones bashing an Uno into something that looks like a bully-beef tin with cellulite. Then crank up the speed - right to the hilt. Yes, you found Paulie. Oh and there's James Flames. Bass strings turn him into SuperFly. Groovy. Check out the trash hat and skanky blonde wig. He's rough and ready for the supersick boogie. First CD's called 'Product of Bad Breeding'. Nah, this ain't hillbillies chewing on cows' hooves and playing sweaty duels in some swamp. This is hardcore psychobilly rock. It's raw, in your face, slick, harsh, incredibly loud with a sly structured beat, and cunningly put together to possess your body and make it dance like a hundred rabid voodoo dolls. For crying out loud, it's a Gretch on Rocka's hip! 'Six Feet' ain't no nursery rhyme. It's hectic and oozes relationship blues. "Six feet taaaaaallllll, I hang my bed on the wall". Get trashed by that wicked insane drum beat. 'Surf's Up' slaps a hurricane on your head, stirs in a few sharks and moody Pulp Fiction twangs - until Martin's "WHUUUHH!!!" rips you back to reality. There are five covers - 'Be Bop A Lula', 'The Way I Walk', 'Shakin' All Over', 'Fever' and the fastest 'Blue Suede Shoes' you'll ever hear in your lifetime. Heehee. No way will these songs ever be the same again. They've been rattled, revisited and rearranged. Rocked up by the Sick Shop. Behold 'The Sick Boogie'. You just know this one's got Nile croc sneers all over. "I C U, Lookin' at me, You must be thinkin', "What a freak" and then Mr Rocka traps you flat with "Don't roll your eyes at me, I'll roll them back". By now you should resemble an electrocuted scarecrow. Limbs jamming out of control, spine doing the ruckus rattle. You are ready for ... holy sweating mamma ... 'James Brown'. Guitar, drums, insane rhythm, boogie in your guts, freaking out of this world. "Where do you think you're going wit' that chain hanging down, Sideburns and Elvis quiff shearing frown, Levi pants and blue suede shoes, Leather on your back BABY YOU'RE BAAAD NEWS" - aarrggh!!! Get more Dark Dog!! And BOOGIE. "I don't know what I say but I say what I mean, I ain't no James Brown but I'm a goddam sex machine" - Mother Grundies, cover your ears, grab your knickers and run for your lives! If you don't shake your bones and caboose on this one, you must be dead. Jeez people, the guitar oh man, the guitar, it's a witch, a temptress, a slut (just hear her squawk "uh-uhh"), it throws tantrums with Paulie and the drums, bass blends in with a lekker thick thrashing - and while you rap your knuckles on the ceiling, the band goes ape. Wanna live again? Do the beetlejuice boogie with these buggers. Yeah. (Carina Laubscher) ------------------------- 'TOEKA' - STEVE HOFMEYR Steve Hofmeyr's lastest CD is a tribute to the history of South African pop, both English and Afrikaans. Steve says: "I requested a top 20 out of 50 songs which I distributed to my fanbase. Their top 20 became my next CD. 'Master Jack', 'I Wanna Live', 'So You Win Again', 'Cry To Me', 'Heart', 'I Need Someone', 'Sunday Girl', 'Jou Hart Is Weer Myne', 'Ou Kraalliedjie', 'Hasie', etc." Steve was born on Michael Jackson's birthday (29 August), only 4 years later (that would make it 1962, hey Steve?), which means he would have grown up in the late 60s and early 70s listening to Springbok Radio, especially on Friday nights. This album reflects the music that influenced his formative years and his renditions here are sincere and passionate. Steve covers Alan Garrity's 'I Need Someone' (see "Forum" below for a message from Alan who now lives in Canada), Al Debbo's 'Hasie', David Scobie's 'Gypsy Girl', Copperfield's 'So You Win Again', Gene Rockwell's 'Heart', Neil Herbert's 'She's A Woman', Gé Korsten's 'Liefling' and many more. It's unusual to hear a male voice singing 'Master Jack' but it seems to work. There are also 4 new original songs on this CD. 'Pampoen', 'Amper' and the powerful 'Appel Van My Oog' are all Steve's own compositions. Steve teamed up with Tully McCully to write the rocking, hooky and tongue-in-cheek '4X4' (pronounced "vier by vier"). The CD closes on a high note (a few high notes actually) with a soaring version of 'Amazing Grace'. "'Toeka' is selling extremely well", says Steve. "I think the nostalgia factor is big out there. We shipped 7 000 copies in the first 4 days." Journeyman guitarist and SA Rock Hall Of Fame inductee Jethro Butow is featured throughout this album and Dan Hill, Kevin Kruger, Bobby Louw and Malie Kelly are just some of the well-known musicians who also appear on this album which can be bought online at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=CDEMCJ6056 Jethro Butow has been really busy lately as he also appears on Sunette's 3rd album 'Kan Jy Dans?', a bilingual album of original songs and various medleys of popular songs from pop's rich history. And Jethro is also featured on Dozi (the man with the unbelievably warm voice)'s lastest release 'Siyaya Ons Gaan...'. See Steve, Sunette & Dozi (plus Ferdi, Dowwe Dolla and Patricia Lewis) on the "Groot 5 plus Lollipop... Ontembaar" (Big 5 plus Lollipop... Untamed) tour. There's nothing gained in criticizing one item to praise another, but label stories are often uneven because they contain surveys of too-wide a range of music ('The Impact Story', a survey of Rodriguez's first label, is like that: pop, R&B, gospel, rock, soul, and novelty). Having said that, 'New Africa Rock' is an evenly enjoyable overview of some Shifty Records artists that flows nicely and suits my taste in rock, pop rock, and folk. What you get is mini-sets by various artists. It's a neat idea. Two songs by Lesego and Jennifer Ferguson, three each from The Sunshines, Robin Auld, James Philips and the Lurchers, and Matthew van der Want, and four songs by Urban Creep). You also get artist photos with some light text. Plus music to make you feel, think, and enjoy. Urban Creep open with rock, and The Sunshines follow with their happy pop rock. Lesogo follows with dark, urban, dance poetry and is followed by the brighter folk-rock of Robin Auld and his distinctive voice. As always, Jennifer Ferguson brings an art-folk consciousness to her set, then James Phillips and the Lurchers storm in with anger and optimism. This mini-festival CD of short sets closes with Matthew van der Want's intimate lyrics, with drums. 'New Africa Rock' has a range of musical forms, but they're all to my taste. And by including two to four songs by each performer, we hear more than their hits, we hear each artist's own diversity and get ideas of what CDs to add to the wishlist. Well it's a solid pop song from one of South Africa's bright musical hopes in the 80's. Fronted by Kevin van Staden, the group's debut single 'Slow Rain' held a lot of promise, but the band failed to really capitalise on this and after a second, largely ignored album 'Greed', they disbanded going their separate ways. Van Staden started work on a solo career, but was sadly killed in a motor accident before this could take off. There is a strong Simple Minds sound that pervades this debut album, especially in van Stadens vocals. The band display an ear for a good tune and all the pop sensibilities needed. Aside from 'Slow Rain', tracks like 'Travel These Roads', 'Rebel' and '10 Seconds' are strong songs that show off the bands talent. I am open to correction, but I think that '10 Seconds' (not the Cutting Jade song) also had fairly good airplay. 'Glory' is a piano driven song that slows the pace and throws in a bit of relaxed Spanish style guitar for good measure. 'This Day' features 8 van Staden compositions that err on the rockier side of pop, but I wouldn't say that they could be classed as being on the poppier side of rock. Celtic Rumours had the looks and the tunes to make a serious assault on the South African pop market. Unlike the boy bands of today, these guys played their own instruments, and composed some solid songs that deserved the attention they got. Released on Umkhonto Records we sees where the good music is (and yes there is a bad pun buried in that last sentence). Read more at http://www.rock.co.za/files/celtic_rumours.html 'Slow Rain' can be found on the 'Rocking Against The System' compilation CD at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=freshcd119 John Samson, London mailto:john@sarockdigest.com {Expect a Celtic Rumours retrospective CD sometime soon from RetroFresh - ed.} _________________________________________ 6.HISTORY & TRIVIA ------------------- SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS http://rock.co.za/charts This week [Last week] Title - Artist 30 YEARS AGO (16 February 1973) 1 [3] I Don't Wanna Play House - Barbara Ray 2 [1] I'd Love You To Want Me - Lobo 3 [2] Woman (Beautiful Woman) - Don Gibson 4 [5] Dreams Are Ten A Penny - Kincade 5 [7] Home Isn't Home Anymore - Alan Garrity 25 YEARS AGO (17 February 1978) 1 [1] Subsitute - Clout 2 [2] It's Heartache - Bonnie Tyler 3 [4] You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone 4 [3] Free Me - Uriah Heep 5 [6] Mull Of Kintyre - Wings 20 YEARS AGO (18 February 1983) 1 [1] I Don't Wanna Dance - Eddy Grant 2 [2] Words - FR David 3 [3] Let's Go Dancing (Ooh La La La) - Kool & The Gang 4 [4] Heartbreaker - Dionne Warwick 5 [6] The Girl Is Mine - Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson 15 YEARS AGO (20 February 1988) 1 [1] (I've Had) The Time Of My Life - Jennifer Warnes & Bill Medley 2 [3] Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley 3 [2] Mony Mony - Billy Idol 4 [4] Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys 5 [10] I Think We're Alone Now - Tiffany After hanging around at number 3 for a couple of weeks in 1973, Barbara Ray moved house from number 3 to number 1. With Alan Garrity also being in a homely mood and coming in at number 5, Lobo, Don Gibson and Kincade must have felt like the meat in an SA sandwich. In 1978 Wings flew back into the top 5 after an absence of 1 week. Clout spent their 4th week at number 1 and Bonnie Tyler her 3rd week at number 2. Debby Boone had raced into the top 5, jumping from 17 to 7, then to 4. Now the brakes were on a bit as she only gained one place. While Eddy Grant was still at the top in 1983, FR David was enjoying his 4th week at number 2. This was quite unusual considering he had spent the 7 previous weeks at the top. Few songs hang around at number 2 after such a long spell at number 1. Meanwhile the ex Mop top and the King of Pop had teamed up for a custody case. The 1988 top 5 continued to be packed with UK and US number 1's. The latest addition was teen sensation Tiffany with a cover of the Tommy James and the Shondells song 'I Think We're Alone Now'. 'Mony Mony' (also a Tommy James cover) had knocked Tiffany off the US top spot. Idol in turn was knocked from his perch by Jennifer Warnes & Bill Medley. Weird Al Yankovic had done parodies of 'Mony Mony' (Here She Comes Now Wanting Alimony) and 'I Think We're Alone Now' (I Think I'm A Clone Now'). Alan Garrity ------------------------ NEWS FROM THE UK - 'GASFEST' Last Saturday, 40 geeetar players from all parts of the UK met for the 2nd annual GASFEST. GAS stands for Gear Aquisition Syndrome... an addiction suffered by many guitarists wanting to own every guitar ever made... although this dude only has two but for want of a better name for the group GAS is what we're known as. We chat on the Guitarist magazine forum, sharing ideas, helping each other on a variety of issues and assist youngsters and beginners make the right choice when it comes to buying gear. The first GAS gig I organised at HardRock Cafe in Brum...which went off okay. We have advanced somewhat with the help of some sponsors, Marshall, Guitarist magazine, etc and Saturday's gig held in Bristol was awesome. Simon Bradley, the media-editor of GM was the man who basically held the show together. Imagine a small function room, filled to capacity with guitars of all shapes and sizes everywhere. On stage where a line-up of amps supplied by Marshall, Matchless, Laney & MesaBoogie. The guitars included the Santana PRS, a Parker Fly, 1958 Gibson Les Paul, EVH Peavy Wolfgang and a Brian May customised with LED's in the neck. A number of players were invited to perform at the event, and my good friend Viz and I opened proceedings by playing three songs - a Stevie Ray V blues, then a Steve Vai classic called 'For The Love Of God', and we ended our duet with 'Satch Boogie' by our good friend Joe Satriani. The good news is that there will be a feature in next month's GUITARIST magazine about the gig and this old soutie from Durbs could be in it. Well that's what this 'Llamanation 1' show was like, without the drunk people smashing things up and there was a half decent sound system. The Llama Lounge is actually an old abandoned shop that the boys from Skanking Nelson managed to hire for some ridiculously low amount of money. They then got some bands together, hired Wynand to do sound, told some people about the show and waited to see what would happen. The night started out with Sedwick the Salesman doing their usual stuff except that Simon was dressed as a woman and Richard was parading around in a Bee Keepers suit, they played well and then vacated the stage so that Two Weeks Old (the new arrivals on the scene) could show us their stuff. They did very well and their bassist played some insane riffs... give them about a year and they will be a very decent band. {Will they have to change their name to "One Year Old" then - ed.} By this time the place was quite full, lots of regular faces running around, all in all a very nice crowd of about 110 people, not bad for word-of-mouth advertising. Then WAR-ON-SALT took to the stage and played their best set ever. They are sounding really good with their new bassist and the crowd really seemed to enjoy them a lot. Then False Pretence played 3 songs as a sort of interlude thing before Skanking Nelson got on to the stage and played a rocking set to a now very amped crowd. At this point I wandered outside and to my suprise saw there were about 100 more people floating around in the road! I ducked back in to the Lounge and watched Hoax play an awesome set to end off the night. So 'Llamanation 1' was a great success and it was enjoyed by all, congrats to the Skanking Nelson boys for finding such a rad venue. Look out for 'Llamanation 2' coming soon with a rumoured line-up of... New World Inside, Skanking Nelson, Zero Tolerance and The Rudimentals.
