The single is called 'I Can't Imagine' and is a tribute to the singer's brother (and manager) Jarren, who was tragically killed in a helicopter accident in Mpumalanga in June. 'J23' refers to Jarren who was 23 when he died. The song was written by Danny K a few weeks after the tragedy and is prefaced on the album by a 'J23 Interlude' poetic tribute. The song was written and performed by Danny K and produced with Pete "Boxsta" Martin, one of the singer's long-time creative collaborators. 'J23' will be released in the next few weeks. -------------- 'GOING NOWHERE SLOWLY' COMES TO THE MERCURY Been watching, loving and laughing at 'Going Nowhere Slowly' on SABC3, Sunday afternoons at 5:30pm. Three Duuudes cruising around South Africa and having the holiday of a lifetime in dorpies and resorts they wouldn't normally get to visit. The songs used on the series' soundtrack are exclusively South African, and the song titles and artists are clearly displayed on the screen while the song is played, which helps a lot. Cape Town band, Seven Day Story, perform the languid title track ("Going nowhere slowly ... but that's alriiiight"), and a double CD of the featured music from the 'Going Nowhere Slowly' series featuring most of the songs used in the series, will being released in September on the Ripchord label. The producers of the series are still looking for more SA music for the remaining episodes, so any bands wishing to submit tracks can email Aidan Harper at mailto:info@ripchord.co.za for more info. On Friday night, August 15, the 'Going Nowhere Slowly' team will be at the Mercury Live in Cape Town for a special 'Rock Idols Party'. Seven Day Story will be playing live alongside Scarlet Host and Kelvin Declined. Seven Day Story will be featuring their new line-up of Michael Naranjo (vocals, guitars), Christo van der Rijst (guitar), Deon Morris (bass), and Michael Horne (drums). The band will be releasing their next single, 'Crystal Clear', as an mp3 download at www.SAmp3.com next week. Their first single, 'All Eyes On Me', reached #4 on the SAmp3.com charts. The band's debut, and as yet untitled, album is being recorded at Electric Chicken Studios in Randburg and will be released in the next few months. Kurt Schoonraad, the Cape Town comedian who is a presenter in the series, will also be appearing on the night and the 'Going Nowhere Slowly' crew will be filming the evening's entertainment for a future episode. There will be a 'Best Dressed Guy & Girl' award, which will carry a special prize and an opportunity to be filmed for the show. The dress code is "Rock Star", doors open at 9pm (R20) and ladies get in for free before 10pm. -------------- REDD-ANGEL NEWS The sensational 23-year-old Xhosa R&B vocalist, Redd-Angel (known to his loved ones as Angel Thandolethu), is teaming up in the studio with Italian popstar Lugli in Milan next month, to record an English cover of Lugli's current Italian hit single, 'You & Me'. Redd-Angel is also set to work in the studio with Craig David while in London during Sept, and returns to SA to promote his debut album, 'Angel Sings Fabulous', which goes on release in SA in October. Redd-Angel's 'She's All That', which is the lead title on his upcoming CD, also appears on the latest SL magazine's 'Selections' CD collection. More on Redd-Angel under the mp3 section, below. -------------- THE FIRST ANNUAL BAND FESTIVAL The first Annual Band Festival will take place at Tempos on Saturday, August 30. In action are bands that over the past year have won the monthly regional finals of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition as well as impressed during this event. Headlining the event is a band that came through the ranks of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition two years ago. Pestroy is headlining the Annual Band Festival and will be supported by the following bands who have all come through the ranks of this year's RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition: 42 Play, Orange, Track 4, Jono's Cure, the Nimbus Experience, Pyramid Tongue, Undersound, Fix 8, Track 4, and the July regional winner of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition. Gates open at 13:00 and entrance costs R40 per adult (the cost of the ticket also includes a complimentary drink) and R20 for children. The Annual Band Festival sees the end of the first season of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition at Tempos and launches the second season of this event at Tempos, which will lead up to next year's Annual Band Festival. The RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition, now in its fifth year, creates a platform for bands to further their musical career. Over the past four years the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition has seen numerous bands launch their musical careers - these include bands like Saron Gas (now called Seether), the Finkelstiens, Tweak, Wes-Lee, Not My Dog, Marlowe, Pestroy, and Plush, amongst others. The RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition is currently held at Tempos in Johannesburg each week leading to a monthly finals and then monthly at Tsunami in Pretoria, Cool Runnings in Bloemfontein and Rafterz in Vanderbijlpark. One band from each of these regions then progresses through to the monthly regional finals taking place at the Coliseum Show Bar at Caesars Gauteng. The winning band at the regional finals gets a day in the studio at RP Studios where they are engineered and produced by Darryl Torr, who will also spend time with the band discussing pre-production. The band also gets a month of Saturdays at Tempos where they get paid for the gig and they also have the opportunity of appearing on a compilation CD. Plus the band gets to appear on the Annual Band Festival 2004. See http://www.SAgigs.com for all the upcoming dates in the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition -------------- SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC QUOTA COALITION - AN ORGANISER'S UPDATE The current state of the quota coalition is as follows: The numbers are currently at just over twelve hundred. The penetration of the black market, which would get the numbers to where we'd like them to be, would appear to be a priority. With many potential signatories not having internet facilities, the main recruitment tool being mooted is books of sign-up forms. These can be circulated at gigs, clubs, etc where people can get the basic idea quickly, put down their names and addresses, and when the form book is full it is returned so we can update the petition. However, while the figure of ten thousand by Feb 2004 is still very much on the agenda, various members have suggested some earlier action which we're looking at for the end of August, as this coincides with the current 20% quota going up to the princely 25% on the 22nd August, and secondly, SA Music Week is from the 23rd to the 30th August. As an artist I've always had mixed emotions about SA Music Week, and the raise to 25% is hopelessly inadequate. But the fact is that SA music will be on the political hot plate so timing is good. Next year is the national election and getting media interest in anything else will be very difficult. I had ambitious plans to stage nation-wide protests for the week before the 22nd, but it looks like that will have to wait. The reality of co-ordinating such a thing with such little notice requires more time than I currently have. A preliminary enquiry confirmed that everybody is pretty much in the same boat. The will is there, but everybody is busy paying the rent. So the awareness raising will take the shape of a media campaign, along with some direct political lobbying. There are several stories in the pipeline by various journalists. A SAMQC letter will go out to all the national press, and the petition so far to select political figures. There are some big guns on the cards and we are confident of some exciting news in the coming weeks. There are other publicity methods such as T-Shirts, flyers etc, but without funding this is difficult. We are looking for a sponsor, but I feel it's important to have and keep our own momentum on this regardless of whether we get one or not. Bed On Bricks boasts Sons of Trout vocalist Mike Hardy, bassist Schalk van der Merwe, drummer Tim Rankin, and Dave "The Bunny" van de Linden on lead guitar. 'Humanarium' is an auspicious opening release, dealing as it does with a man carrying a Goldfish around in a plastic bag in Cape Town, and what happens after that. And a "humanarium" is similar to an aquarium!! A surreal and sharp song that moves to a crisp and cool jazzy riff that recalls the best of the Honeymoon Suites. Bed On Bricks are finishing off their first album after a few months of very well-received live gigs in Stellenbosch, Cape Town and surrounds. Mike Hardy's Sons Of Trout bandmates are all over the globe at the moment, so Bed On Bricks gives him a fresh platform for his songs until the "Trouts" pick up their careers again. (SS) -------------- MORNING HAZE - 'JADED MIND' [INDIE] http://www.SAmp3.com Morning Haze's spiky little punk-rock track immediately grabbed my attention and affection due to it bringing back warm memories of 'Another Girl Another Planet', one of UK punk's finest moments courtesy of The Only Ones. Not sure if this young SA band have ever heard that classic, and 'Jaded Mind' is clearly an original song, but Morning Haze have managed to capture all the no-frills, emo-fizz of those days and have a potential hit on their hands. The track needs a slicker production, but its demo rough-edgedness is definitely part of its charm. Morning Haze are Will (vocals, rhythm), EM (bass, backing vocals), Phil (lead), and Jason (drums) and the band has been together in this form since October 2002. The band have just released their debut 'Coming Up' demo EP and their sound has been described as "angst-driven rock and punk with a strong emphasis on variation, innovative melodies, guitar riffs and lyrics". Other songs on the EP are 'Special' and 'Need', but 'Jaded Mind' got the nod as the first single to be released as an mp3 download and for that you should be grateful! (SS) 'Jaded Mind' is available now at http://www.SAmp3.com -------------- REDD-ANGEL - 'FABULOUS DAY' (Kwaito Mix) Redd-Angel has recently been playlisted on the UK's most important London Radio Station CAPITAL RADIO with his South African hit record 'Fabulous Day' (Digest #3 in November 2001). "South African music is at last making serious inroads into the overseas music scene," says his manager Unie Moller. Moller has very kindly authorized the Gabi le Roux Kwaito mix of 'Fabulous Day' for SAmp3.com. So get ready for a redd-hot summer by listening to the infectious sounds of Redd-Angel. -------------- THE FALLEN - 'COSMO GIRL' 'Cosmo Girl', the first mp3 single off The Fallen's 6-track EP, is an excellent song! These guys know what they're talking about - we all know those self-centred, selfish, "Cosmo Girls"! The lyrics are clever, catchy and very relevant in today's world where image is (almost) everything. 'Cosmo Girl' has a stunning melody, great guitar work and is one of my favourite tracks by The Fallen. The lyrics are available from the band's website: http://www.thefallen.za.net) (TdB) Read more about The Fallen in Tony de Buys' new ZaZone.com Spotlight on new SA bands, below... ----------------- STEVE HOFMEYR - '4x4' [EMI] Steve has kindly authorized one of the tracks off his recent triple gold CD 'Toeka' released through EMI. Though 'Toeka' (which means something like "back in the day") features mainly cover versions of songs from South Africa's rich pop history, '4 x 4' (vier by vier) has lyrics composed by Steve Hofmeyr set to a tune written by master producer and ex-McCully Workshop co-founder Tully McCully. Musicians on this catchy tongue-in-cheek and, dare I say, "rocking" song include Jethro Butow on guitar, Kevin Kruger on drums and keyboards with Malie Kelly, Melody Bracey, Morné Breytenbach and Bobby Louw providing the backing vocals. [BC] http://www.stevehofmeyer.co.za ----- CDs ----- DEREK GRIPPER AND ALEX VAN HEERDEN - 'SAGTEVLEI' [OPEN RECORD] In February last year the then bushy-haired composer, guitarist and viola player Derek Gripper, and dreadlocked composer, trumpeter and accordion player Alex van Heerden came together at the Wonder Gigs to record a composition entitled 'Sagtevlei'. Half of the audience at the Beach Road Studios walked out, the other half were moved to tears. Alex and Derek's classically styled "avante goema" was something nobody had ever heard before, and nobody knew quite what to say. A year and a half later, 'Sagtevlei' has been released on Cape Town's newest label, Open Records, and is starting to pick up some positive media attention. Read about the Wondergig live recording session, listen to a documentary and sample 'Vrou van Samaria', at: www.wondergigs.com. Visit Open Records and order the CD: www.openrecord.co.za Iain Harris -------------- TAMARA DEY - 'THE FIRST LADY AND THE BOYS' [GALLO] 'The First Lady And The Boys' is the first album proper from Tamara Dey, and follows her 'The First Lady' EP from 2001. For this album, Tamara worked with a range of the top current producers in SA in an attempt to focus the spotlight on this otherwise (generally) unheralded group. That impressive list of producers includes: Bruce Sebitlo of Brothers Of Peace fame, Alexis Faku (who has worked with Danny K, TK and Joyous Celebration in the past), Bogdan Pashovski (the Russian producer and Jazz pianist), G Mothusi aka 'Jerah' (a young up-and-coming producer), Mandla Spikiri from the band Trompies, Craig Massiv, a producer and DJ from Jazzworx, Roger De Sousa, Jean Oosthuizen from Afro South Recordings, and Kevin Manas and Tenyi from High Tech Audio Studios. 'The First Lady and The Boys' is a house music album that mixes acid jazz with funk, disco with Kwaito, and rock with Latino. First single off her new album is 'So Sweet' (Uyazi Mos), a Kwaito-tinged dance song and collaboration with Brothers Of Peace. Other songs off the album include the disco track, 'It¹s Disco', 'Like A Moon', 'Hot Love', and a cover of the JJ Cale/Clapton classic, 'Cocaine', which is included as a personal tribute to a friend, Ashley Longhurst (1976 1999), who died of a drug overdose. Born Tamara Nathalie Atzeni in Belgium of an Italian father and South African mother, this 23-year-old singer was dubbed 'The First Lady' by the kwaito brethren after Tamara became the first and so far only white girl to cross over and be accepted into the kwaito scene. Tamara picked up three SAMA nominations for her debut, 'The First Lady' EP - 'Best Pop Album', 'Best Dance Album'' and 'Best Newcomer'. (Staff Reporter) -------------- ZAZONE.COM SA BAND SPOTLIGHT: Tony de Buys, the dedicated webmaster of www.ZaZone.com, will be throwing a regular spotlight on one of the many SA bands currently affiliated to his SA music site: THE FALLEN The Fallen is a four-piece band from Gauteng. They've been together for about two years now. The vocals are similar to that of the Crash Test Dummies, Creed and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam but their work is much better. They easily rate as one of my favourite unsigned SA bands. They have a light-hearted approach to life, but are really serious when it comes to their music. The Fallen is made up of Markus (lead guitar & vocals), Philip (bass), Gys (guitar & backing vocals) and Ockert (drums). The band is working on getting more gigs lined up, becoming more professional and working towards getting their music careers to be a full time thing! A full-length album is in the pipeline. The Fallen are dedicated to their fans and are running a competition on their website - the winner will be able to have The Fallen play at their own house party! Unfortunately the competition is only open to Gauteng residents. The Fallen played at Oppikoppi on the 9th of August, one of their biggest gigs so far. I'd strongly suggest that you get to one of their gigs and get hold of one of their EP's, which are available from the band and/or at their gigs. MY OPPIKOPPI IN TEXAS! Due to the regrettable circumstances of job and 13,000 miles, I could not attend OppiKoppi this weekend. So I staged my own OppiKoppi. A few CDs, a few beers, and hello! a mini-festival echoing the real thing. Friday afternoon I played Jack Hammer's 'Anthology' and 'Bootleg' here in Texas, about when the band was actually performing in South Africa. I wouldn't let Piet Botha and Jack Hammer go until they had played two encores. Piet wore a cool shirt, too (a local Blanco High School, Texas, T-shirt I sent him recently!). Beeskraal replaced Kobus! at Oppikoppi, but they performed here, followed by Kobus!, because I enjoy both the 'Huis Toe' boys and Theo and Francois' music. The Beeskraal EP, representing a short set, sounded so good that the boot-scootin' rock orkes played their entire 'Huis Toe' album for an appreciative audience in Texas. Then Kobus! A surprise this weekend in Texas: the Springbok Nude Girls played a surprise set - perhaps not unexpected since several members of SNG played OppiKoppi with their current bands. M-Mm! Karen Zoid's set here was great, though consisted only of songs from her first album. Her next gig in Texas will include favorites from her new second CD. As with Jack Hammer, I played her CD, 'Poles Apart', about when she was actually performing. With a few mp3s and the latest 5fm Showcase I was able to round out the festival experience and enjoy pieces of bands whose CDs I don't have, such as AK Massive, The Finkelstiens, and Marlowe. No herbal zephyrs at my weekend festival, but plenty of suds (not Black Label!). Coors Light and Guinness Stout and great music kept the party going. I hope to do it again next year, but live. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com _________________________________ 5.A NAARTJIE IN THE UK ------------------------ London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music THE SUNSHINES - 'REMOVEABLE TATTOOS' London is experiencing a rare thing at the moment - sunshine. So what better way to celebrate than by listening to the Sunshines. The Sunshines are Greg and Tanya Schoeman and are produced with the help of Lloyd Ross and Willem Moller, and with names like Louis Mahlanga, Chris Letcher and Brendan Jury on the credits list it can only mean one thing, a quality album. True to their name, The Sunshines make bright and breezy pop music, full of jangling guitars and bouncy vocals from Tanya. The tunes are full of catchy hooks and feel good moments, while song titles, 'Happy Person', and 'Wanna Make Love', just make you wanna shout out "Yes! Yes!" er, well "Yes! What a great album is what I mean". Tanya's strong, clear vocals inject a wonderful warmth into these pop gems that shine alongside the Smiths-inspired guitars. Throw into the mix an all too brief Stevie Wonder-esque harmonica from Kenny Mathaba on 'Overtime' and you know you're in for a good time. If you want another reference point, think Katrina & the Waves. I did find all this bright and colourful sound rather strange coming from a Lloyd Ross and Willem Moller-produced album. Not that they are usually associated with dull and dreary music, but rather they tend to be involved in more serious music. However, they have been able to move into pop mode with great ease. What they do ensure though is that this never slips into being the flowery, sugary pop that clogs up the charts these days, but rather intelligent pop that six years on from its release still sounds marvellously fresh. So while we in London are busy enjoying our heat wave and The Sunshines, those in South Africa that may be feeling the winter cold a bit would do well to warm themselves up to 'Removeable Tattoos'. Dickey Lipscomb was better known to South Africans as Dickey Lee. This country singer who was enjoying his first SA hit in 1973 was originally signed to the legendary Sun record label, the one that Elvis started out on. 'Ashes of Love' did not chart on the main US charts, but did reach 15 on the Country Charts. Boney M's 8th week at number 1 continued to deny Copperfield the coveted top spot. On top of this, there was strong competition from John Paul Young and a certain do do do-do do-do dooo 'Baker Street' from Gerry Rafferty. The latter sold over 4 million copies in the US reaching number 2 there and number 3 in the UK. Irene Cara toppled Bob Marley in 1983 with her theme to the popular movie 'Flashdance' starring Jennifer Beals. Marley had spent a mere 2 weeks at the top. Tears for Fears were back in the top 5 with Change' following up 'Mad World', their number 2 hit from February of that year. It seemed that if you wanted success in 1988 your name had to end in 'ie'. Kylie and Climie occupied the top 3 slots. Climie's number 3 hit was doing what the title said while love changed everything, except position. It was nearly 8 years after their top 5 hit, 'Underneath the Radar', that the rest of the world woke up to Underworld as none of their early work seemed to chart elsewhere. Their latter success was due mainly to the inclusion of 'Born Slippy' in the 'Trainspotting' soundtrack. Hi, When I lived in South Africa from 1979-1988, there was a song out which I loved and I think it was called 'Charlie'. Jackie mailto:Jaxingham@yahoo.com Ed.- 'Charly' (to give it it's correct spelling) was sung by Sean Rennie in 1974. This is a completely different song to 'Charlie' by Rabbitt, which was a big hit in 1976. 'Charly' is available on this compilation CD: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=CDREDD610 Sanity restored hopefully! -------------- WHEEEERE'S PAUL! What has happened to Paul E Flynn? Details of all these events at http://www.SAgigs.com -------- SA PUNK -------- By Daniel Neville Gig Report: HOG HOGGIDY HOG, THE RUDIMENTALS, AND ZERO TOLERANCE The Whammy Bar (2 August) Since the Mercury Live started holding their Matinee (under-18) shows other venues have caught on. The Whammy Bar has now started to also hold these wonderful inventions that allow the younger generation of punks to enjoy the music that is on offer. The Whammy Bar started to fill up around 1:15pm (the show was only supposed to start at 2:30) which showed how eager the crowd was to get going. First up was Zero Tolerance. Now, being in the band, I can't really rate ourselves but the crowd seemed to enjoy what we had to offer and we definitely had fun!. If you want to judge us for yourselves, then come and see us at our next show (see Mercury Matinee gig info below*). So after the very fast punk/Ska sounds of Zero Tolerance, the mood chilled out a bit when The Rudimentals took to the stage. This band is absolutely awesome and they really got the crowd going to their irie ska tunes. I especially enjoyed their cover of the James Bond 007 cover, which was crazy... this band is going to go really far and I can't wait for a full CD from them. Next up was the all mighty 'Hogs', and I don't ever think I have see this band play a bad show and today was no exception. They started up with the traditional 'DK', which got the whole crowd moving in absolute frenzy, which is quite scary in the Whammy Bar (if you have ever been there you will know why). I saw at least one bloody nose coming out of the pit. This was the first time I had seen the 'Hogs' play with Mike Horn (their new drummer) after Davie left, and I must say it did not affect their sound one bit. Other favourites like 'Auntie Trish' and 'John and Philippp's song' were played, They even chucked in a cover of 'Murder the Government' and 'Stand By Me'. The 'Hogs' are one of my favourite punk bands ever. Look out for their new single, which should be coming out soon. So after the 'Hogs' finished their set and played and encored, everyone was definitely all punked out and ready to go home to have a shower before the next show at the Purple Turtle that same night ....but that's another story** ..... [DN] * You can catch The Rudimentals, Zero Tolerance and others at the special Under-18 Matinee at the Mercury Live on August the 16th - see gig guide for more details. ** Read a review of that Purple Turtle gig below.... See http://www.SAgigs.com for details and other SA Punk gigs -------------- MERCURY MATINEE The Mercury in Cape Town is staging the next in its series of under-18 No-Booze gigs on Saturday 16th August from 2-6pm upstairs at the Mercury Live. The Matinee line-up will feature four of Cape Town's best new bands with Ska outfit, The Rudimentals, headlining. Support is from three high school bands - ska-rockers Zero Tolerance (starring the Digest's own SA Punk scribe Daniel Neville), Ally Katz, and Janie Jones, who drew a lot of attention following their recent Mercury Lounge gig. -------------- LIVE IN LONDON: THE SUNWAYS AND THE MOON Sunways' no show at the Half Moon in Putney 8 August 2003 As I wandered across the Thames tonight there was a stunning three-quarters moon. Once I got to the other side I found a Half Moon and went in as Sunways was apparently playing. I was a bit nervous, as I had heard tell of Robbie Boake appearing naked on stage and I kept thinking 'Willy or won't he?' My worries increased when Robbie's clothes did not appear on stage, but I was quite relieved that the man decided to do like his clothes and also not appear on stage. In fact the whole band had gone down this route and left me with no choice but to return via the three-quarters moon to the tube and the long journey home. On the plus side, my ears weren't ringing, my voice was not hoarse and I had avoided spending a couple of hours in a room full of sweaty bodies in London's sweltering summer. The reason for the no show was that Sherene Hustler, the band's drummer, had to return to SA on short notice. All I can say is I hope that it's not bad news. Cheers John Samson -------------- LIVE IN SA: SKA MEETS PUNK MEETS ROCK! A Saturday night at The Purple Turtle, about a hundred stoked fans, a few beers, and four bands playing some kick-ass music. What more can one ask from a night. Especially when Hog Hoggidy Hog is on the cards. "Hog" are currently touring with The Rudimentals, bringing a fresh ska/punk sound to the stage, that encourages even the faintest of hearts to get up and mosh its butt off (some mixed bodily metaphors there - Ed.). Opening up the show for the evening were guests, 12th Avenue, coming out 'guns-a-blazing', and pulling out all the stops. A band that just seems to be at their very best live showing the crowd what they are made of musically. Super-tight drums and bass, grinding guitar riffs and solos, and glass-shattering vocals - sounds like a good start to the night. Next up was Sweet Victory, and "Loud And Proud", and "Fast And Hard", were some of the comments heard from the crowd. A not very sober Sweet Victory started the evening with a song that goes something like, 'F-k religion!!!...' Needless to say, we knew where this was heading. The Rudimentals added a touch of class to the evening. A classy, smooth ensemble of ska/punk/reggae tunes, with a dash of bounce in the beats. A very good band, and one that knows how to dress for the occasion (suit and tie), looked very cool while the music was hot. Last but definitely not least, the band that everyone had come to see... Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce to you: "Hog Hoggidy Hog"!!! There is no doubt why they are one of SA's number one ska bands. "Hog" had just about every person in the audience on their feet, jumping about in front of the stage. The music was played to its perfection, with a guest artist or two (or three, or four) to add a bit of variety to the mix.
