ABDULLAH IBRAHIM

Culled from his many albums and including 'Mannenberg', its a must for old fans as well as the beginner. If you start here, you've got a beautiful journey ahead getting into the others! Let it drift off across you local neigbourhood...

DEEPAK RAM

'Searching for Satyam' by Deepak Ram is one of the more compelling jazz releases this year. African jazz flute with influences from all over, it goes down really easily with an African sunset, (or your memories of one!)

Imminent New Releases:

Two independent releases through One World in the near future will be the new album by Off the Edge ('Just Another Band') <http://listen.to/offtheedge> and also 'Music for Funerals' <http://www.rock.co.za/files/radiorats_funerals.html> - The first Radio Rats album in many years. We wait with baited breath.

PIET BOTHA
http://rock.co.za/legends/pietbotha

'Jan Skopgraaf', Piet Botha's new album is chasing the huge sales of 'Suitcase Vol Winter', and deservedly so. Dedication and hard work has results - good one Piet!

TANANAS

The ever inventive Tananas are back with a new album with gently latin sounds and the unique blend of african cool they have always had. Enjoy!

TONY COX

Acoustic guitar maestro Tony Cox is back with a new offering of 'choons', loosely based on ants... It's called 'Matabele Ants' and its a very fine groove.

NEW RELEASES
---------------

OFF THE EDGE
from the Dinosaur Days website
http://www.geocities.com/dinosaurdays

Off the Edge - Just another band, a pre-release copy of their forthcoming third album, due for release in March/April this year.

We've always maintained that we have some serious talent in this country, and Off the Edge are a typical example of this. The band actually go way back to the Eighties when they released their debut album. They released their second album in 1999, and it showcased the talents of vocalist Judy Marshall, bassist/vocalist Tony Groenewald and multi-instrumentalist Peter Hanmer. This new album looks to be even better than its predecessor if the featured track, 'Cheating', is anything to go by. This track has "hit"' written all over it, very much in a Pablo Cruise/Boston vein, with some stunning vocals from Marshall and some even better guitar playing from Peter Hanmer. The production is awesome and does the music proud. Local radio stations need to get behind this band in a big way, because overseas radio stations are already showing a keen interest. You can purchase their albums via their website at http://listen.to/offtheedge

Visit the excellent (and very cool) Robin Auld website and order his new compilation CD.

This website has a full discography, some of Robin's poetry, gig dates and much, much more.

Easy to navigate and quick to load. One of the best SA music websites I've seen in a while...

--------

SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS - SURPASS THE POWERS (INTERNATIONAL RELEASE)

The Springbok Nude Girls' international release of their recent album, 'Surpass The Powers', received a timely boost when 'Shot', one of the singles off the album, was included on the 'New Voices 32' promotional CD, which is attached to the latest German version of Rolling Stone magazine. The band's fifth album was released in seven European countries, namely: Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Germany. A further release in Britain, Holland and France is also being considered, depending on the album's success in those seven countries.

---------

OHM - OHM

Ohm, the Brendan Jury-fronted rock outfit, will have its debut, eponymously titled CD released in the UK by MELT 2000. If sales and interest in the band and album are positive, it may be followed by a short British tour. With Durban band Tree's recent album doing interesting things in Britain, where it was released before it hit the SA shelves, things are looking up for SA bands looking to break into the lucrative UK market.

----------

HIT CONNEXION

This CD from David Gresham Records has a mixture of international and SA tracks, with SA being represented by the Fetish single 'Constant' (off the 'Shades Of A Ghost' EP), an early Wonderboom single called 'Something Wrong', and 'Projection Man' from 57. Wonderboom, surely one of the better SA rock outfits, has left Wildebeest Records and signed a deal with DGR. The first Wonderboom single to be released on DGR will be 'The Big Bash In The Sky' and the band's debut full-length album is due soon after that.

----------

SELAETO SELOTA - PAINTED FACES

When this emerging SA jazz guitarist was offered a spot on the special 'Jazz made in SA' stage at the 1999 North Sea Jazz Festival, it was contrary to the Festival's rule that states that any artist who performs at the Festival must have already released an album. An exception was made for Selaelo Selota who grabbed the opportunity to impress all who saw and heard his outstanding talent and potential. The no-album situation has now been corrected with the BMG release of 'Painted Faces', a melodic and gentle 11-track package that is sure to attract many more devotees to this artist's silky guitar skills

-----------

SUGARDRIVE - A SINGLE AND SOME REMIXES

This six-song EP features remixes of some of the songs that have thrust this dynamite band back into the forefront of the SA rock scene. With '35 Mil' receiving extensive airplay on 5FM, and the band basking in the glow of acclaim from its support spot on the Alanis Morrisette SA tour, Sugardrive must surely feel optimistic about the year ahead. The EP begins with the Plum-assisted version of 'Navelgazer', the 'When I Died I was Elvis' track, with Plum's Troy Dougans and Warren Leicher handling the rappy vocals over the usual languid Sugardrive instrumental style. There's the radio edit of '35 Mil' (plus an extra 'Imax Mix') which was a surprising choice as a radio single despite its many airplays. The balance of the EP comprises the three new mixes of 'Disco Lazarus', the first single of 'WIDIWE". This "spoonful of Sugardrive"-type collection should keep their (completist) fans very happy until their next full album release. For newer converts however, we recommend you rather buy the two previous albums, 'Sand. Man. Sky' and ' When I Died I Was Elvis'.

-----------

RENE HUNTER

This young SA vocalist has been given the full treatment by David Gresham Records on this, her debut album. They placed her in the capable and creative hands of Ziggy and Allan Goldswain and the resulting 16-track album is a focused, fun-filled and fresh piece of work. Hunter has a competent set of vocal chords and these (mostly original) songs allow her to flex her voice across a variety of styles. Opening track and first single, 'Bye Baby', is a hooky piece of pop not entirely dissimilar to the songs on the Britney Spears '99 smash album. But there the comparison ends as Hunter grabs her opportunity and works hard to make these arrangements interesting and dynamic. Second single, 'The River', is a cover of the Garth Brooks track, redone with a strong African feel and Ladysmith Black Mambazo-type vocals in the background. Certain other tracks here could also pop up as singles in the future and Rene Hunter is definitely an SA artist to watch as the year unfolds.

-----------

FRUIT FLY NAVIGATORS - THE URGENCY OF NOW

This debut, five-track EP was released late in 1999 and was almost lost in the end of year rush. But with January being a notoriously quiet month, this five-piece decided to promote it as the first interesting SA release of '00, and so it is. 'The Urgency Of Now' spreads its six power tracks over 20-odd minutes and manages to cram in enough invention and highlights to leave one very keen to hear a full length offering.

The members of the band are Mark Norrie (vocals), Craig Jenkins (guitar), Adrian Jacobson (guitar), Dave Campbell (bass) and Billy Weisenger (drums). Together they have created a hard rock sound that works off a thundering rhythm section and deft guitar touches, with Mark Norrie's vocals resembling Arno 'Nude Girl' Carstens' with its clarity, whoops, emotion and confidence. Opening track 'Me=You' draws minor comparisons with Placebo, one of the bands that were name-checked as influences on the group along with Stone Temple Pilots and Radiohead. But this is no copycat album, excellent songs like 'Crime City Blues', 'Happy' and 'Drive', leave no doubt that this is one of the SA bands to watch very closely during 2000. A sterling and solid debut.

NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL

In less than two month's time, Cape Town will be hosting the largest jazz festival in the city's (country's?) history. The organizers of the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival (Mojo Concerts BV) have agreed to jointly host this two-day event along with ESP-Afrika. The potential spin-offs for the South African and African jazz artists is dependent on the success of this concert. This Festival will provide a platform for all these artists as well as opening doors for them to perform on the international jazz festival circuit. Cape Town does have a history of similar ventures that failed to ignite, but with all the relevant authorities and players getting firmly behind this festival, it is hoped that this will be the beginning of a bright future for SA jazz.

So, the concert has been titled the North Sea Jazz Festival - Cape Town 2000 and all jazz lovers are urged to consider a weekend in Cape Town with over 30 top international and African jazz acts to choose from. Just one question though, wouldn't the South Sea Jazz Festival - Cape Town 2000 be more a more appropriate title? The power of the branding aside, it does seem a strange choice of name. However, the organizers are confident that, based on the success of the 2000 event, this could become an annual event at which stage it could see a relevant name change. Still, it's a small quibble, and it is hoped this Festival gets the national and international support and attendances it requires and deserves.

The confirmed list of artists, so far, is:

(African Artists) Youssou N'Dour, Busi Mhlongo, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Jimmy Dludlu, Carlo Mombelli, Hugh Masekela, Bheki Mseleku, Interzone, The Hotep Idris Galeta Quintet, Bongo Maffin

(International Artists) Herbie Hancock, Courtney Pine Band, Ronny Jordan, Johnny Griffin & Trio, New Cool Collective, Victor Bailey, Kenny Garrett, Abbey Lincoln & Trio.

SPLASHY FEN
http://www.splashyfen.co.za

Splashy Fen, Kwa-Zulu Natal's premier winter music festival, is in preparation for yet another massive music event from 27 April to 1 May 2000.

Nestled one mile high, in the heart of the southern Drakensberg, Splashy Fen has developed a reputation as the South African festival that combines the most beautiful landscape with a satisfyingly diverse music selection. The mountainous trout farm, with its wildlife and snaking rivers, will host approximately 60 different acts across three stages over the newly expanded four-day celebration.

Organisers are currently collecting a stimulating array of material from bands and musicians and applications for the remaining few slots may be made to the music coordinators. The deadline for band submissions is Friday 18 February.

Splashy Fen is also screening traders and flea marketers to add services and character whilst catering to needs of the 10, 000 strong crowd expected at this years event.

This year, Splashy Fen will showcase many new young artistes, up and coming performers, increased children's and adult sports and entertainment, as well as some of the top SA performing artistes.

VINYL TO CD (PART 2)
How to get good CD-R sound from old records -
an article in 3 parts by Bas Mollenkramer

Practical Experience

The strangest things happened when I tried to turn my rare and valuable old albums into CD's. Here are a few trials and tribulations.

Eccentric records: No these are not records made by weird people, but records which play off-center. They sound terrible, like all the singers are seasick. The solution is to take a round file and file out the centre hole. Then attempt to place the record on the turntable so there that the actual record grooves are centralised, without the pickup arm showing the least sideways motion. This takes trial and error and lots of patience. It took me twenty tries to get my Otis Waygood Band album playing correctly but I got there in the end.

Mono records: Here I often use a Stanton 681-EEE mark III cartridge with the genuine mono needle. Sometimes the stereo needle works better. With mono records you get three times as much chance of getting a good transfer. You can choose between only left, only right or a mix of left and right. When transferring the first two Flames albums, the left channel was invariably cleaner and less worn.

Amplifiers: I noticed early on that the tape outputs of most commercial stereo amplifiers are unsuitable for sound cards because the levels are too low. If the tone controls can be completely bypassed then another option is to use the headphone output. I built my own preamp for this job based on the excellent Burr-Brown OPA-604 low distortion audio chip.

Stereo records: Depending on the age and condition of the record I will either use a Denon moving coil cartridge for undamaged discs or the Stanton for trouble spots. The Stanton has a built-in dust brush which also helps it to track smoothly on problem records.
Vibration: I once did a transfer from a very valuable live album which had an extremely quiet passage. Unknown to me at the time, my kids slammed the front door while this transfer was happening. The resulting CD has a huge very low frequency thump at this point so I will have to do the work again. I never noticed the thump during CD mastering because I was using multimedia speakers. The big stereo reveals all.

Live albums: These pose a special challenge because usually there are no silent gaps between the songs. The CD assembly software must therefore be capable of writing the tracks to CD without any gaps. In my own software this is called Disc-At-Once. My CD-burner machine, from HP, needed a firmware update before it could even do this job.

Long Working Hours: It takes hours and hours to do a decent job. Take an old thirty minute LP with ten songs as a basic minimum. First you need a little over thirty minutes to sample the record into the computer. When this is done the resulting file needs to be saved. Another five minutes. Then each of the ten songs must be extracted from the master file in order to get separate CD tracks. Per song this means finding start and finish, copying to another file and deleting in the original. Easily three minutes per track. Then each track needs to have a smooth start and finish. This is definitely handywork. Another five minutes per track. Perhaps some tracks need slight changes in loudness. On Simply Otis Waygood the last track on side one is far louder than all the rest. Reducing this by three decibels made the whole album far more listenable. Count on two to three hours for a simple LP transfer.

Declicking: Many audio computer programs can take the clicks and pops out of the music by using smart mathematics on the sound files. But it takes all night. This is best done when all the album tracks are still in a single file, i.e. before separating them out. Start the declicking program just before you go to sleep so it will just have finished when you wake up. The software doesn't remove all the clicks. Major scratches require dedicated and loving manual restoration. And of course lots of patience. My rare true-stereo copy of Soulfire is nearly mint except for a major scratch which I removed by hand.

Difficult problems: The final track on Simply Otis Waygood is an amazingly delicate blues which starts off very quietly. The pressing quality wasn't that good to begin with so this track posed special challenges. I ended up using a combination of automatic and manual declicking. The first minute or so features a guitar on one channel only, so I just silenced the other track, allowing it to come back into the mix with a gentle curve. The result is very listenable and pleasing.

Advanced stuff: I have an old genuine stereo LP copy of the Modern Jazz Quartet's Fontessa, with almost no bass at all. The recent CD reissue is mono only with lovely rich bass. I sampled both into the computer and filtered the mono mix leaving only the bass. I cut everyting above about 150 Hz. Then I went to work on the stereo LP sample, first removing the very loud 60 and 120 Hz mains hum. Remember this was recorded in the USA where these are the mains frequencies. Then I cut away any remaining bass. I had to then resample the two pieces because the speeds were not quite the same. Finally I carefully aligned them and merged them into a single file. I was hugely please with the result. This exercise certainly tested my digital audio editing skills to the limit.

Tape Hiss: So far I have found no home software which will remove tape hiss without completely ruining the music. So I tend to ignore it. It doesn't bother me and it also has a very useful masking function rendering other imperfections inaudible. But I know one day I will have good dehissing software. When that happens I will teach myself to use it to the best effect. In the meantime I have toyed with the idea of atually introducing a sample of tape hiss between the songs on a CD to simulate playing a real LP but I could never bring myself to do it.

Commercial CD's with problems: Recently I took a CD of Ozzy Osbourne into the car to enjoy on a long trip. Along with five other discs in my changer. The album is No More Tears on Epic 467859-2, made in Austria. After a few minutes play in the car it sounded like my car system was dying a horrible death, with enormous distortion and finally no sound at all. I switched to another CD and the music was fine. Back to Ozzy for a few minutes and the same death. Examining this CD in my software revealed intorable levels of DC-offset. So it's like someone connected your car battery to the volume control of the CD player, making all the amps and speakers unbalanced. I fixed this very embarrasing (to Epic) problem using my software, burnt myself an exclusive corrected CD copy which plays fine.

Missing Seconds: I have a Pink Floyd BBC-concert album which sounds beautiful, except that its skips in one place. Luckily it's during the chorus. Using software, I cloned the missing one-and-a-half seconds from another chorus and inserted this into the skip. If this sounds easy, forget it. To make the insertion undetectable you have to learn to use delicately set-up crossfades. Otherwise the edits will generate a huge thump. But after several tries I got it right and none of my friends can pinpoint the insertion. I rescued a fine recording.

Filtering: I made a CD of Queen's mesmerising 25-minute Live Aid show from 1985. During Crazy Little Thing Called Love there is a tremendous one-minute long screech of microphone feedback howl. Using filtering techniques I cleanly cut this screech from the music, leaving behind a prefectly enjoyable concert recording.

This series will be concluded next issue...

Surely not, but if you really must, then just reply to this e-mail,
