Fetish Leads Nebula BOS Pack Into Germany

During January 2000, CDs by Fetish ('Fetish'), Black Noise ('Hip Hop Won't Stop'), Wendy Oldfield ('On A Pale Blue Dot'), Colorfields ('Incidents'), Bad4Real ('Ses Fi'kile'), Dantai ('Operation Lahlela'), Jorge Carlos ('Trip Of Africa') and BOO! (the "Pineapple" album) were released in Germany by the resurgent Cape Town record company, Nebula BOS. There is already a genuine and large interest in this varied crop of SA artists and many favourable reviews of these albums and artists have already appeared in the German music press. A Nebula spokesperson reported that Fetish's unique sound and style has already begun to take off in the clubs. The band's Limited Edition debut CD (in those different material sleeves) have already sold out and been reordered. It is possible that the band may consider switching to a printed sleeve for the next pressing of this CD, which will make those original copies very collectable.

NEW RELEASES
---------------

The Honeymoon Suites - FiveSTAR

The first offering from the "Suites" was the short, very sweet, and confidently-titled 'Greatest Hits' collection. That EP was released mainly to give their many fans a memento of their unforgettable live extravaganzas. 'FiveSTAR ', their first full-length album, finds the group taking the energy and expansive style of that first EP and expanding it into a collection of songs that proves that this is a group with their fingers firmly planted on the contemporary music pulse. The sound and style of 'Five Star' is an intelligent extension of that first EP, with the band's writing and arrangements illustrating both the hard work and sense of fun ever-present in any music they produce. Once again, Kevin Parissien's deep, lounge-style croon gives these songs the pop-sleaze feel they deserve, while the rest of the band's instrumental versatility conjures up the pumping, brassy fun and decadent musical backdrop that makes all these songs so ecstatically danceable and yet so sneakingly deceptive.

Most of these songs bear Budi Carver's songwriting signature. Carver is a music-loving explorer who uses a wide range of influences and styles to concoct these pieces. Yet they all share the "Suites" trademark dance-worthy sense of fun and sinister, sensual intentions. 'Dr Strangelove' wears its "Frank Zappa at the Disco" influences on its sleeve, and both the long and radio edit versions of 'Los Libidos' epitomize the Honeymoon Suites' bounce and bravado. As with all the 'Suites' output, there's an in-your-face sexuality abounding, from the nude group back-cover shot, to songs with titles like 'Spanish Fly', 'You Make Me Tremble', 'Powdered Love', Work That Skirt', and 'Party In My Head'. 'Five Star' leaves no doubt that The Honeymoon Suites are a group for whom fun and skill are equally important concepts. It's an album that can induce mindless and manic dancing or eyebrow-raising suss and style. They have enough talent and motivation to impress, intrigue, entertain, and stay well on track for what is definitely going to be a musical career to watch.

Tony Cox - Matabele Ants

This is the third solo album from the ex-Zimbabwean steel string acoustic guitar wizard. Accompanied by Barry van Zyl on assorted and intriguing percussion (including a brushes solo on the 1988 Durban telephone directory), Cox produces yet another seamless combination of Leo Kottke-type dexterity and his "two tunes in one song" melodic mastery. The album was produced in a more casual manner at fellow guitarist Nibs van der Spuy's old mansion in Durban, and stands proudly alongside Van der Spuy's recent and wonderful 'Lines On My Face' album. As with his two previous offerings, 'Cool Friction' and 'Looking For Zim', Cox keeps it sweet and simple, letting the African soul in his music shine through. Opener 'Watertree' sets the mood with Cox's urgent repetition of the basic riff driving the song. 'Kwe-Kwe' is a jolly knees-up with background claps adding to its impact, and 'Anthole' finds Cox attempting (and succeeding) in conjuring up images of ants scurrying around. 'Ek Se' is a delicate Goema piece and 'Kwazulu' sounds similar to 'Freedom', the song with which Richie Havens opened the original Woodstock Festival. If African instrumental music is your bag, then put this in yours.

STEPHEN FARBER

For whatever it is worth I am an old guitarist/ drummer/ bassist who played with people like Alvin Kramer, Allen Faull, Max Hendricks, a few times with Butch Rice, Henry Barenblatt, David Marks, etc. I suppose these okes are beyond the memory levels as we are all far to old now .....

I even remember driving around looking for good surf in the late 60's with Andre De Villiers, who is the best.

I also have two PRS guitars for sale - anybody?

Best regards

LPs to CDs

In your SA rock digest you had an article on recording LPs to CD {Also reprinted in the latest issue of Stage magazine - ed}. I have been doing this for a while now and would like to give my contribution to this issue. I use Musicmatch software to record the LP to a WAV format. This records the LP with flat response. On completion I convert all files to MP3 format as this adds some high tones to enhance the sound. The converted files are in 96 kbps mp3 files (you cannot record in higher bits as you have more difficulties to filter the noise). Once this is done I play file through the equalizer and remove unwanted noise and cracks and it gets saved as a wav file again. Once this is done I copy it on to a CD. This process does not take long. The longest part is to record LP to wav format. Should anyone know a better solution I would like to hear about it.

I would also like to know how legal it is to copy a LP to CD for own use or to distribute it to other "club" members. I do it for the love of it and if legal would like to share. Maybe more get involved and we can produce good quality CD's of bands like Hawk, Otis, Freedoms, Circus, etc. I do not want to put wav files or mp3 files on the net but would like to swop them with club members that will be active in making files. Maybe you could start a members corner for this sort of thing or maybe the persons interested could email me. But once again I will only do this if it is legal and no money involved.

Regards,

Frank

LENNY IN FOR A SURPRISE?

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Lenny Kravitz, the Goo Goo Dolls, and the Cult ought to be warned that they are going to be blown off the stage by the phenomenal Springbok Nude Girls? I smile when I think about these slick acts coming into SA unawares, most likely expecting the "support acts" to be 10th rate, bush league acts that couldn't get arrested outside SA. Boy, will they be surprised. I just hope Lenny and the Dolls will be there early enough to see and hear SNG in all their sonic splendor. How ironic that SNG is supporting such calculatedly commercial and ultimately forgettable acts. It reminds me of when I saw Midnight Oil blow the hopelessly lightweight UB40 off the stage in August 1985, or when INXS stunned the crowd while opening for Adam Ant back in April 1983 (admittedly, INXS did later turn into a useless pop band). How about this for an odd pairing: U2 opening for the J. Geils Band at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on the "October" tour in 1982. I wonder if anyone will be taping the show (FM, soundboard, or bootleg) and would consider sending me a tape (in fact, I would love to hear any live tapes of the Nudies if anyone has some for trade). Have mercy on an American who may never see SNG live. Thanks for letting me gloat.

ALF MOFOKENG

I recently downloaded an MP3 song file from mp3.com, it's called 'Poorman' and it's by a guy called Alf Mofokeng. According to the notes on the site, Alf died of TB halfway through recording his debut album. What a tragedy! His music is ace in my opinion, it's such a shame that we'll never hear any more of it.

Does anyone have any info on Alf and perhaps any idea as to how to get hold of any more of his songs othr than the single submission on MP3.com?

THE JOURNEY FOR TANANAS

Wondering if anyone has or knows of any underground or where I can
get bootlegs of any Steve Newman or Tananas stuff. I found one tape
called "Alive at La Plaza" with Tony Cox and Steve Newman, but don't
know of anything else.

If anyone could help me out here, please mail me at:
mailto:buttery@iafrica.com

I have now collected every Tananas CD, from their first "Tananas" to
"Seed" and really would like to hear some unreleased or, for me, unheard stuff.

Another really big favor I need from someone or many, is if you have
any Guitar Tablature for any Tananas songs. I have figured out loads of
their stuff and would be willing to share it with you. ANYTHING is more than welcome. PLEASE.......in desperate need here.

SOUTHERN CROSS FOLK & ROCK FESTIVAL
MARCH 24 - 26, 2000

The Southern Cross Festival organisers have been asked by the Red Cross to have a collection depot for the Flood Relief Fund at the Festival, and the idea is strongly supported by Round Table.

Festival-goers may donate old clothes and blankets, and also surplus
groceries at the end of the festival. The Red Cross will deliver it to the appropriate organisations for distribution to people in the disaster areas.

"The festival had HEART," said Tim Wells of last year's event. It seems it has heart this year, too.

There have been a few changes in the line-up schedule (we're such nice
Festival Organisers, that we try to accomodate the muso's preferences and requests!).

New performance times:

FRIDAY music starts 18h00 and ends SATURDAY 02h00
Adult Art
Liquid Sky
Ichabod
Famous Curtain Trick
Shawn Phillips
Butternut
Cinnabar
Salty Dog
Fruit Fly Navigators
Interitmo Drummers

SATURDAY music starts 09h00 and ends SUNDAY 02h00
Mim Erasmus and puppets
Jack in the Green
Fiona Tozert and Alien
Plastic Ocean
Halcyon
3rd Streme
Dave Marks,Alan Judd & Dan Chiorboli
Sunways
Steve Newman
Duncan Faure
Switch
Ginger Baker & the KZNQ
Syd Kitchen & Amakool
Shawn Phillips
The Tim Wells Band
Jane Doe
Slugs of War

SUNDAY music starts 08h45 and ends 14h00
Mark Harris
Theo Coetzee
Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters
1 x band to be advised
Robin Auld
Richard Walne Band
Mike Smith
Will's Blues Band
ALL MUSO'S - GRAND FINALE!!

The gap on Sunday is because Steve Fataar is with Izzy at the moment and depending on how things are going with Izzy he may not be able to play at the festival. The organisers are keeping the gap open for as long as possible, but have got some pretty good surprises in store if Steve can't make it.

ANDY NARELL

Renowned steel pan jazz musician Andy Narell will once again be visiting our shores. Andy first visited South Africa in September last when he performed at the Arts Alive festival, and will be returning in April to complete thirteen dates in Gauteng, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, and Bloemfontein.
His backing band will be made up entirely of South African musicians namely:
Denis Lalouette (bass), Rob Watson (drums), Andile Yenana (keys), Basi
Mahlasela (percussion) and Louie Mhlanga (guitar). Louie first met Andy when Andy played an impromptu gig at the Bassline with Vusi Mahlasela and Louie. Andy enjoyed Louie's playing so much that he invited him to record in France for the new album: "Fire In The Engine Room", which will be released in April.

Andy will be performing at a number of festivals throughout the country, on the 9th April he will be playing at a Castle Milk Stout Festival at Morula Sun, and again at Mega Music on the 14th and 15th April also sponsored by Castle Milk Stout.
